The 30-Second Verdict: Quick Summary

For most buyers, no. Sleep Foundation scores The Purple Mattress 8.3 out of ten, and a Queen costs $1,599. On the same site, the Casper Dream scores 8.9 and costs $1,595 on sale (list $1,995), close to Purple's price.

Want coils? The Saatva Classic scores 9.5 on Sleep Foundation, with 10.0 for cooling against 8.0 for The Purple Mattress. A Queen is $1,904 on sale, $305 more than The Purple Mattress; its card in chapter 12 gives the list price. You get 365 nights to try it, and a return costs $99.

Other picks by need: for a memory foam hug, Loom & Leaf scores 9.1, with 9.0 for pressure relief against 8.0. It costs $2,804 on sale (list $3,179). For latex, the Zenhaven scores 8.7 ($3,274 on sale, list $3,699).

Where Purple still wins: The Purple Mattress gets 8.0 for partner motion, against 6.5 for the Saatva Classic and 7.5 for the Casper Dream. Its cooling score is 8.0, against 7.0 for Loom & Leaf and 7.0 for the Casper Dream. Buy it if you lay on a Purple and liked the grid best.

Key Strengths
  • Cool and calm together. Of the beds in the verdict, only The Purple Mattress gets at least 8.0 from Sleep Foundation for both cooling and partner motion.
  • You can lie on one first. Purple has its own showrooms and sells through stores like Mattress Firm.
  • Free setup on Rejuvenate. Every Rejuvenate comes with in-home setup and old-bed removal at no charge.
Good to Know
  • Returns cost money. Purple takes a charge of at least $150 off a refund; chapter 6 has the rules.
  • Some scores are for older versions. Test sites rated a Firm Restore and a Medium Rejuvenate; Purple sells a Medium Restore and a Firm Rejuvenate today.
  • Few hard specs. See chapter 5 for what Purple doesn't publish.
Chapter 01

Is Purple the best mattress for you?

Three things decide this page: the feel you like, which version each site tested, and what a return costs. Each score below names the exact bed its site rated.

Outside review scores
Review sites checked: 7 outlets. Their scores: 3.2 to 4.7 out of 5; 7.58 to 8.88 out of 10 for overall scores (RTINGS gives usage scores only). Model they tested: The Purple Mattress (all 7 outlets reviewed it). Each site tests in its own way, so read each row on its own.

For most buyers, no. The Purple Mattress is the Purple every site here reviewed. On Sleep Foundation, the Casper Dream outscores The Purple Mattress, and on sale it costs about the same. Pick Purple if its grid felt best when you lay on it.

The foam beds sit in Essential. The other two collections add coils, and prices climb with each one.

When Purple makes sense
  • You lay on one and liked the grid: that matters more than any score.
  • You share a bed: the strengths list above shows its cooling and motion scores.
  • You want a Firm bed on a budget: start with the PurpleFlex card.
  • You want setup done for you: Rejuvenate beds include it.
When Another Mattress May Suit You Better
  • You want the top Sleep Foundation score on this page: the Saatva Classic (see the verdict).
  • A memory foam hug appeals: Loom & Leaf.
  • You want latex: the Zenhaven.
  • Score and price both matter: the Casper Dream.

Main configuration: The Purple Mattress (all 7 outlets reviewed it). Read each row's testing scope before comparing scores. Each outlet uses its own method, so we don't combine these scores into one rating.

Reading the scores

Why we don't average the scores

Each site tests its own way, on its own scale, and some rated a version Purple no longer sells. So each score sits next to the bed it tested, and we never blend them into one number.

Use the dates and sources shown with each result. Prices, models and policies can change.
Chapter 02

Comfort and firmness: which mattress fits you

Why this matters to you: A feel name like Medium can land differently on different bodies, so match the feel to how you sleep and what you weigh.

Start from how you sleep. The finder below uses Sleep Foundation's fit ratings for three all-foam Purples.

For the hybrids, we have no fit ratings for today's feel, so lie on them in a showroom (chapter 11) before you choose.

Heights run from 8 inches to 17.5 inches (see the compare table), so check the pocket depth of your fitted sheets.

Sleep Foundation ratings

Sleep Foundation rates three Purple beds, as sold today, by sleep position and weight. Pick both to see which of the three it rates best for you. Its Restore and Rejuvenate ratings were for a different feel than Purple sells now, so they are left out.

Four alignment checkpoints against a neutral posture line Neck Shoulders Lower back Hips level with spine sink in, no pinch no gap below no sag Straight spine line
  1. Neck: on your side, your nose should line up with the middle of your chest, not tip up or down.
  2. Shoulders: your bottom shoulder should sink in. Tingling or a numb arm means the bed is too firm for you.
  3. Lower back: on your back, slide a flat hand under your waist. A big gap means too firm; no room at all can mean too soft.
  4. Hips: ask someone to look from the side. Hips lower than shoulders means the bed is too soft for you.
Figure 2.1: Four checks to run in a store, lying still in the position you sleep in most. The store test in chapter 11 says how long to lie on each bed.
Chapter 03

Compare the mattresses

Why this matters to you: Ten beds share one grid idea but differ in build, height, feel and price. Choose all foam or coils first, then the feel, then compare prices.

The table puts all ten beds side by side: build, height, feel and Queen price. Each bed comes in one feel, so you pick the feel by picking the bed.

Essential beds are all foam. The two hybrid collections put coils under the grid, and the Rejuvenates add a quilted top. Grid depth runs from two inches to a stacked five on the RejuvenateUltimate.

Construction All-foam
Profile 9.25 in
Firmness Medium-firm
Queen $ $1,599 (Queen)

The Purple Mattress is all foam under a two-inch grid, in one Medium-firm feel, 9.25 inches tall.

The step up is PurplePlus, a taller Medium bed; the step down is PurpleFlex, a Firm one.

The caution: NapLab gave it 5.1 out of ten for edge support, so test the edges if you sit on the side.

Best For

  • You want cool, quiet sleep for two; its scores are in the verdict.
  • You want the Purple test sites know best: all seven reviewed it.

Consider Instead If

  • You want more cushion in an all-foam build: PurplePlus.
  • Sleep Foundation rates the Casper Dream above it, for a near-equal sale price (see the verdict).

PurplePlus keeps the two-inch grid and adds foam, for a Medium feel at 11 inches.

The Purple Mattress costs less and earns the same 8.3 from Sleep Foundation.

The caution: Sleep Foundation's lifespan estimate for it is the shortest of any Purple it rated.

Best For

  • You want a Medium all-foam bed with more height.
  • You're a side sleeper: the finder in chapter 2 shows where it rates best.

Consider Instead If

  • The same Sleep Foundation score for less appeals: The Purple Mattress.
  • You want coils under the grid: the Restore Hybrid.

PurpleFlex is the Firm, 8-inch all-foam Purple, sold as NewDay until early 2024.

It has the lowest Queen price in the lineup, and it was marked down when we looked.

The caution: its scores at Sleep Foundation and NapLab are the lowest of any Purple those sites rated.

Best For

  • You want a Firm feel at Purple's lowest price.
  • Stomach sleepers: chapter 2's finder rates it highly for you.

Consider Instead If

  • Side sleepers: PurplePlus gets higher side ratings in the finder.
  • You want a softer all-foam feel for more money: The Purple Mattress.

The Restore Hybrid sets coils beneath a two-inch grid. It feels Medium and stands 11.5 inches tall, as Purple's entry bed with coils.

Step up to RestorePlus for a deeper grid and a Medium-soft feel.

The caution: Sleep Foundation and NapLab tested a Firm Restore; Purple sells a Medium one today, so their scores may not fit yours.

Best For

  • You want coil support at Purple's lowest hybrid price.
  • You like a Medium feel on coils.

Consider Instead If

  • You want a hybrid scored at today's feel: RestorePlus Hybrid (chapter 1).
  • Coils for less appeal: the Saatva Classic costs $795 less on sale (chapter 12).

RestorePlus Hybrid adds a three-inch grid over coils, for a Medium-soft feel at 13 inches.

Sleep Foundation gives it 8.8, its best rating for any Purple.

The caution: several sites tested firmer or softer versions Purple no longer sells; chapter 1 marks which.

Best For

  • You want a softer hybrid with a deeper grid.
  • Side sleeping matters: RTINGS gives it 7.1 for side sleeping.

Consider Instead If

  • You want it softer still: RestorePremier Hybrid, with a Soft feel.
  • On sale, the Saatva Classic scores higher on Sleep Foundation and costs less (chapter 12).

RestorePremier Hybrid is the Soft Restore: a three-inch grid over taller coils Purple calls "CoolFlex", at 13 inches.

NapLab is the one test site we found that scored it.

The caution: NapLab noticed a smell for 26 days, the longest of any Purple it tested.

Best For

  • You want the softest Restore.
  • You can let a new bed air out for a few weeks.

Consider Instead If

  • A long smell would bother you: RestorePlus Hybrid took ten days in NapLab's test, on an older, firmer version.
  • A deeper grid stack with a Soft feel: RejuvenateUltimate, for far more money.

Rejuvenate has a Firm feel and stands 14.5 inches. A quilted top Purple calls "DreamLayer" sits over a two-inch grid and coils.

Setup and old-bed removal are free on every Rejuvenate.

The caution: Sleep Foundation rated a Medium one before the 2025 relaunch. Today's is Firm.

Best For

  • A Firm feel under a quilted top appeals.
  • You want in-home setup included.

Consider Instead If

  • You want a softer Rejuvenate: RejuvenatePlus, in Medium.
  • You want firm coils with a current Sleep Foundation score, for far less: the Saatva Classic, in chapter 12.

RejuvenatePlus pairs the quilted top with a three-inch grid. Its feel is Medium, at 15.5 inches.

Four sites reviewed it, all before the 2025 relaunch.

The caution: Sleep Advisor rated the bed it tested Firm, while Purple calls it Medium.

Best For

  • You want a Medium Rejuvenate with a deeper grid.
  • You want free setup with a Medium feel.

Consider Instead If

  • You'd rather save on a three-inch grid: RestorePlus Hybrid, with its Sleep Foundation score.
  • You want two stacked grids: RejuvenatePremier.

This bed stacks two grids, each two inches deep, under the quilted top. It has a Medium-soft feel and stands 15.5 inches.

RejuvenatePremier costs more than RejuvenatePlus, which is just as tall.

The caution: we searched seven review sites, and none had reviewed this bed as sold today.

Best For

  • You want a Medium-soft Rejuvenate.
  • You want two grids without the tallest bed.

Consider Instead If

  • You want a bed test sites have reviewed: RejuvenatePlus.
  • You want the softest, tallest Rejuvenate: RejuvenateUltimate.

RejuvenateUltimate is the tallest Purple, at 17.5 inches, with a three-inch and a two-inch grid under the quilted top, in a Soft feel.

It's the most expensive bed in the lineup.

The caution: GoodBed rates it Medium, not Soft, and we found no test site that scored it.

Best For

  • You want the deepest grid stack Purple sells.
  • You want a Soft, very tall bed.

Consider Instead If

  • A Soft feel for less appeals: RestorePremier Hybrid.
  • You want latex for far less: the Zenhaven (see the verdict).

Mattress prices and value

Why this matters to you: Price climbs with each collection. Going from The Purple Mattress to a Restore Hybrid adds $1,100, so decide first whether you want coils.

Purple runs sales often, so prices shift. In late September 2026 only PurpleFlex was on sale: $999 a Queen, list $1,299.

The size grid shows The Purple Mattress in each size. PurplePlus adds $500 over The Purple Mattress for a taller, Medium bed.

Moving to coils is the big jump: the Rejuvenate costs $2,800 more than the Restore Hybrid. Queens span $7,800, from the PurpleFlex sale price to the RejuvenateUltimate. Retailers set their own prices, so a store tag can differ.

Chapter 05

How well do the mattresses hold up?

Why this matters to you: A mattress is a long buy. Tester lifespan estimates and the warranty's dip rule are the best guides to how long a Purple should last.

Test sites give lifespan estimates for seven Purple beds. Two were rated at another feel than today's.

All-foam beds. The Purple Mattress: About 6 to 7 years (Sleep Foundation). PurplePlus: About 5 to 6 years (Sleep Foundation). PurpleFlex: About 6 to 7 years (Sleep Foundation).

Hybrids. Restore Hybrid: At least 8 years (Sleep Foundation, Firm Restore; today's Restore is Medium). RestorePlus Hybrid: About 6.5 to 7.5 years (Sleep Foundation, rated Medium 5). Rejuvenate: About 8 to 9 years (Sleep Foundation rated it Medium; today's Rejuvenate is Firm). RejuvenatePlus: At least 10 years (Mattress Clarity, 2023 review of the version sold before the 2025 relaunch).

Estimates differ by bed and by site, so lean on the warranty: chapter 8 explains what counts as a dip. Check the edges in a showroom too, since edge support was a weak spot in NapLab's test of The Purple Mattress.

What to watch for, and when:

  • First three weeks: Purple asks you to give the bed 21 nights to adjust, and a return can't start before then. Judge it after night 21, inside the trial.
  • Any time under warranty: measure a dip the way chapter 8 shows before you file a claim.
  • Every night: keep it on a solid base or close-set slats, and keep a cover on it (chapter 8).

What we checked What the brand doesn't publish
VERIFIEDBrand pages, checked Sep 26, 2026: We read the product, return, warranty, delivery and help pages, plus each Queen price. NOT PUBLISHEDCoil count, coil gauge and foam density: Purple names its coil units but prints no coil count, coil gauge or foam density. PurpleFlex is the one bed with a foam firmness number, in the compare chapter's specs table.
THE BRAND SAYSFire barrier: All ten product pages describe the fire barrier; the materials chapter quotes each one. NOT PUBLISHEDFiber blend on the current tags: Purple's law tag file lists a different cover blend than today's product page, so check your own bed's tag.
THE BRAND SAYSCertiPUR-US foam claim: Purple says all its polyurethane foam is certified; the materials chapter explains what the label covers. NOT PUBLISHEDWho pours the foam: No page we read names the foam maker or the glues.
THE BRAND SAYSDelivery, setup and trial terms: Each read on Purple's help and policy pages; chapters 6 and 7 give the terms. NOT PUBLISHEDStore terms, smell and lifespan: Stores set their own return terms. Smell and lifespan figures come from test sites; see this chapter's opening and the FAQ.

Where sources disagree

  • Delivery time: one Purple help article says three to eight business days by ground, and a newer one says five to ten. Chapter 7 uses the newer one.
  • Smell: Purple says its mattress doesn't off-gas, while NapLab's test found a smell that lasted days (see the FAQ).
  • Weight and height: NapLab weighed its Queen Purple Mattress at 110 lbs and measured nine and a half inches thick. Purple lists 88 lbs and 9.25 inches.
  • Feel labels: Sleep Foundation rated the RestorePlus Medium and Sleep Advisor rated the RejuvenatePlus Firm; Purple calls them Medium-soft and Medium.
  • Returns history: NapLab says returns were free before 2025, but Purple's returns page already took shipping charges off refunds in late 2024.
Chapter 06

Sleep trials, returns, exchanges and fees

Why this matters to you: A return here costs money, so the charge is part of what you risk when you try a Purple at home.

You get 100 nights from delivery day, but a return costs $150 for Essential beds, $250 for Restore and $350 for Rejuvenate. You must sleep on it 21 nights first.

Purple or a partner picks the bed up. Your refund is the price less discounts, any interest and the charge. Purple's pages differ on timing: up to ten days on the shop page, up to 14 business days in the help center. The charge is waived for a delivery problem or an unopened bed.

  2. Night 21The earliest night Purple takes a return or exchange
  3. Night 100The last night of the trial

Not covered by the trial: Beds bought in stores follow the store policy

Figure 6.1: The trial in three dates and three prices. Put the last date in your calendar the day the bed arrives.

How that compares: the verdict at the top sets Purple's charge against a Saatva return.

Swapping for a new feel: Purple allows one exchange. You pay any upgrade, and transport charges may apply. The trial then runs from the first delivery, or 30 days from the second bed if that is later, so a swap doesn't restart the 100 nights.

Check the terms for your seller and order date before buying from Purple.
Chapter 07

Delivery, setup and old-mattress removal

Why this matters to you: Big Purples are heavy. A RejuvenateUltimate Queen weighs 246 lbs, Purple says. Check how your bed ships before you order.

Shipping is free. Weight decides the carrier: FedEx takes lighter beds, and partner crews bring heavy ones and do setup.

Setup is free on every Rejuvenate, and the crew takes your old bed too. On some Essential and Restore beds, setup costs $200 and includes that. PurpleFlex has no setup option.

Typical wait: 5 to 10 business days by ground after the bed leaves the warehouse

  1. Order: buy on purple.com; shipping is free.
  2. Wait: plan for the window shown above.
  3. Without setup: the carrier brings the box, and you move and unpack it yourself.
  4. With setup: the crew puts the bed in place and takes your old mattress away.

Chapter 08

What do the warranties cover?

Why this matters to you: The warranty covers deep dips, not normal softening, and the wrong base can void it. Know the rules before you set up the bed.

Purple's warranty runs ten years from purchase, for the original buyer only. A dip must be deeper than 1 inch to count, and the cover has 2 years.

Purple repairs or replaces a covered bed at no added charge, and Purple chooses which. After day 100 you pay transport, and a replacement gets no new trial. The $150 to $350 charge that applies to returns also covers warranty handling.

Base rules: use a solid base, slats no more than three and a half inches apart, or an adjustable base. A box spring voids coverage, and so do resale, storage, use by a medical patient or a bed used without a cover.

Bought in a store? File a warranty claim with that store first, so keep its receipt.

Covered when the dip is deeper than 1 in, measured with nobody on the bed.

  1. Strip the bed down to the mattress and wait a few hours so the top layers can recover.
  2. Lay a straight edge (a broom handle or long level) across the dip, resting on the flat parts.
  3. Measure from the edge down to the deepest point, then photograph the ruler for your claim.

Review counts checked on each site · they change daily

Customer reviews and complaints

Why this matters to you: Star ratings depend on who runs the site and who can post. Purple's own rating boxes sit far above Trustpilot and BBB, so read each one for what it is.

Two purple.com boxes, Trustpilot and BBB tell very different stories. The table gives each score and count.

How we read the reviews
  • We read four pools: two purple.com rating boxes, Trustpilot and BBB.
  • We never add the pools together. Each one counts a different group of buyers.
  • We recorded each score and count, plus the BBB complaint count.

The Trustpilot profile is unclaimed, and at least one review there is about another company. BBB gives Purple an A+ rating and accreditation, which is separate from its customer score.

Read each platform on its own: who runs it, its rating scale, how many reviews it has, and the date we checked it.

Reported praise and concerns:

  • Sort by newest on purple.com, so reviews of an older version don't sway you.
  • We didn't sort reviews by cause, so this page ranks no complaints. Read the one-star reviews yourself on Trustpilot and BBB before you buy.

What are the mattresses made of?

Why this matters to you: Purple names its layers with its own labels, not numbers. Knowing what it says and what it leaves out tells you what to check on your law tag.

Every bed puts a gel grid near the top. The table sums up each bed's layers, with Purple's names in quotes.

Chapter 5 lists the specs Purple doesn't publish, like coil counts. Each product page names a "Fiberglass-free fire sock", and Purple says its fire barrier uses no fiberglass.

Safety labels, and what each one covers

Purple makes one outside claim for its foam. Here is what it covers and what it doesn't:

CertiPUR-US (foams)
Polyurethane foams only, per the brand
Purple says all of its polyurethane foam is CertiPUR-US certified. We could not confirm the listing in the certifier's online directory.
What these labels do and don't prove

CertiPUR-US covers foam, not the whole mattress. It says nothing about the gel grid, the coils or the cover fabric.

We typed this from Purple's own law tag PDF for the Queen made in McDonough, linked from the product page. The tag on your own bed may differ by model and year.

The three steps

1
Find the tag and the factory

The tag is sewn to the mattress. Read the MADE BY line: this one names Purple's plant in McDonough, Georgia.

2
Read what is inside, by weight

The maker must list each filling by weight; the card above shows this tag's list. The gel pad is the grid, at just over half the weight.

3
Check the fire barrier line

Look for the word glass, or for silica, in the fillings. This tag lists neither. Tags change over time: this file shows an older cover fabric than today's product page.

Full law tag guide, factory code decoding, and the certificate glossary live on our shared safety page.

How to read this: the law tag, the brand's own statements, and certificates each cover different things. A spec the brand doesn't publish isn't proof it's missing; it just isn't shared.
Chapter 11

Where can you try and buy the mattresses?

Why this matters to you: Trying the feel in person can save you a return charge. A store visit costs nothing.

You can lie on a Purple in its own showrooms and at stores like Mattress Firm. Test in a store, then check whose return terms apply: a store purchase follows the store's rules.

Before you pay, ask any store three things: the return window, the return fee and who picks up the bed.

Purple vs. other mattress brands

Why this matters to you: Each card matches a rival to one need: score, feel or price. Scores come from Sleep Foundation where we have them, and every price was read the same day.

Sleep Foundation scores the Saatva Classic and Loom & Leaf above The Purple Mattress, and three hybrids undercut the Restore Hybrid.

Switch if a rival wins on the thing you care about most. Stay if Purple's grid felt best in a showroom.

The first three cards compare with The Purple Mattress; the three hybrid cards compare with the Restore Hybrid. Pick the card that matches your top need. On the hybrid cards, no test score is shown, so judge them on price and feel.

Saatva Classic, Queen
Coils and cooling
Saatva Classic $1,904 (+$305)
Innerspring; Queen 11.5 in Luxury Firm sale price on saatva.com, Sep 26, 2026 (list $2,229)
Why choose over Purple: Scores higher than The Purple Mattress on Sleep Foundation. Its cooling score is 10.0, and its trial runs 365 nights. Purple keeps the edge on partner motion: 8.0 against 6.5.
Loom & Leaf, Queen
Memory foam hug
Loom & Leaf $2,804 (+$1,205)
Memory foam; Queen Relaxed Firm sale price on saatva.com, Sep 26, 2026 (list $3,179)
Why choose over Purple: Pick it if you want memory foam. Sleep Foundation gives it 9.1, with 9.5 for partner motion. Purple cools better on that site: 8.0 against 7.0.

Chapter 13

How we research and report

What we read for this page, when, and what stays unknown. Each number names its source.

Why this review exists: Purple sells ten mattresses online and more in stores, and it has renamed beds over the years. We read Purple's pages, its SEC filings, court records and outside reviews, and we date each check.

We don't test beds ourselves. We report what Purple and named test sites publish, and we say when a fact isn't published.

How we check this page

What we check: purple.com product, policy and help pages, Purple's law tag files, its SEC filings, court dockets, outside reviews and owner rating pages.

Dates: we read prices and policies on Sep 26, 2026.

Proof first: a claim needs a named source. If we can't find a fact, we say so.

No mixed scores: each test site keeps its own scale.

Versions matter: when a site tested an older or firmer version, we say which.

Stage 01 Factory

Who built the bed

The law tag card in the materials chapter shows one tag, from a file Purple posts for one bed.

Stage 02 Test results

Outside test results

Chapter 1's table pairs each outlet's score with the model and feel it rated.

Stage 03 Safety

Fire safety papers and the law tag

We read Purple's fire barrier and fiberglass statements. We didn't review fire test filings for this page, so we cite none.

Stage 04 Pressure and motion

Outside pressure and motion tests

Sleep Foundation and NapLab supply the pressure and motion scores, each tied to one model.

Stage 05 Reviews

Review scores, side by side

Chapter 9 explains how we read the review pools.

Safety and materials

Where are Purple mattresses made?

In the US, Purple says. Purple says all its mattresses are made in the US, at its plant in McDonough, Georgia. Check the law tag sewn on your mattress for your own bed's plant.

Does a new Purple smell, and for how long?

Not for long in NapLab's test. NapLab noticed a smell from The Purple Mattress for 4 days, against a 7-day average in its tests. Purple says its beds don't off-gas.

Is there a weight limit on a Purple mattress?

No hard limit. Purple suggests up to 300 lbs per sleeper, or 600 lbs for two, and going over doesn't void the warranty. For fit by body weight, use the firmness finder in chapter 2.

Buying and policies

Do I need to flip or rotate a Purple?

Don't flip it; rotating is up to you. Purple's beds are one-sided, and its help center says rotating is optional.

Should I wait for a Purple sale?

Maybe, if you want PurpleFlex. In late September 2026 we saw up to $300 off PurpleFlex and $300 off PurpleRenew, while the other nine beds showed one price. Purple sales come and go, so check purple.com before you buy.

Can I pay for a Purple over time?

Yes, on purple.com orders. Purple offers Affirm: 0% APR for qualified buyers, otherwise 10 to 36% APR; Acima lease-to-own up to $5,000. If you return a financed bed, interest you've paid isn't refunded.
