What do the brands say about fire barriers, fiberglass and certifications?

Why this matters to you: Every mattress sold in the U.S. must pass a federal open-flame test. Some brands pass it with a barrier made with glass fiber, which can get out if the cover is removed. Know what's inside before it's in your bedroom.

Saatva names a plant-based thistle barrier; WinkBeds names a cotton and rayon blend. Saatva says in writing that it never uses fiberglass; WinkBeds names its barrier but doesn't use the word.

The trade-off: WinkBeds replaces the bed for free, but only once per mattress, ever. Saatva replaces it free in years 1 and 2, then charges a $149 fee for each repair and states no limit on repairs.

Both brands cover a dip deeper than 1.5 in, so measure it the same way for either bed.

  1. Strip the bed down to the mattress and wait a few hours so the top layers can recover.
  2. Lay a straight edge (a broom handle or long level) across the dip, resting on the flat parts.
  3. Measure from the edge down to the deepest point, then photograph the ruler for your claim.

Can I use my current bed base, or an adjustable one?

Usually, if it meets each warranty's rules. Saatva needs slats less than 4 in apart and center support on a Queen or larger, and allows an adjustable base on the 11.5 in Classic only. WinkBeds says all its mattresses work on adjustable frames. Its warranty asks for a firm, rigid surface with center support, such as a matching foundation or an adjustable base on a sturdy frame, and you must be able to prove it.

Can I swap for a different feel?

Yes, with both. Saatva charges $99 for an exchange. WinkBeds charges $49 and gives you a new 60-night trial on the second bed.

Can each side of the bed have a different feel?

Yes, with either bed, as two Twin XLs. A Split King is two Twin XL mattresses, and Saatva says to order two Twin XLs in different feels. WinkBeds sells The WinkBed in Twin XL too. Saatva sells 11.5 and 14.5 in heights, and WinkBeds' Plus is 14.5 in against 13.5 in for its other feels, so match the halves.
