The Purple Mattress Review (2026): Firmness, Price and Who It Suits

Type All-foam
Firmness Medium-firm
Queen Price $1,599
Height 9.25 in
Trial 100-Night Trial
Warranty 10-Year Warranty

The 30-second verdict

The Purple Mattress suits people who want a cool, buoyant all-foam bed and sleep mostly on their backs or switch positions. It is a poor fit for sleepers who need sturdy edge support or a softer, deeper cradle. The catch is the unusual grid feel: it works for some people, but the $150 return charge can make a mismatch costly.

Best forCouples who want cool, quiet sleep from an all-foam bed: Sleep Foundation gives it 8.0 for cooling and 8.0 for motion isolation
Not ideal forPeople who sit on the bed edge a lot: NapLab gave it 5.1 out of 10 for edge support

Pros
  • Cool feel. The open grid helps air move through this all-foam bed.
  • Quick response. The grid springs back fast when you change positions.
  • One clear feel. Purple lists one medium-firm option, so there is no firmness menu to sort through.
Cons
  • Weak edges. NapLab found the edge compressed a lot under weight.
  • Unusual grid. The buoyant feel differs from slow-sinking foam, so it may not suit everyone.
  • Thin profile. At 9.25 inches tall, it may not give heavier sleepers enough depth.
  • Return charge. Purple lists a $150 transport charge for a return of this model.
Feel & Fit

How firm is The Purple Mattress, and which firmness should you pick?

The Purple Mattress has one medium-firm feel, though testers score it differently. Purple gives it the medium-firm label. NapLab rated its older 2022 version 5 out of 10, while Sleepopolis puts it between 6.5 and 7. Tom's Guide rates it 7, and Mattress Nerd 6.5. That spread shows why the grid may feel firmer or softer on different bodies. There is no firmness choice on this model. Try it first if you are unsure about the springy, floating feel.

Feel & Fit

Is The Purple Mattress right for your sleep position and body weight?

The Purple Mattress suits many back sleepers and people who switch positions, plus some light-to-average side sleepers. It is a poor bet for most stomach sleepers or people over about 230 pounds. The grid yields under the shoulders and hips, yet some side sleepers may press through it. Mattress Nerd says it works best for back, side, and combo sleepers at average weights. Mattress Nerd says stomach sleepers under about 130 pounds may fit best. Motion results are mixed: NapLab found good isolation, while Sleepopolis and Mattress Nerd warn that the grid's bounce can carry larger moves. NapLab rated edge support 5.1 out of 10, so do not rely on the edge for sitting.

Feel & Fit

Is The Purple Mattress good for back pain?

The grid gives under pressure and may help keep the back supported, but Purple makes the strongest pain claims. Purple cites its own sleep study; it is a company-backed result, not an independent clinical trial. Mattress Nerd says the model may suit back-pain sufferers because the grid spreads pressure. That is not proof it will treat pain. If back pain is a health concern, ask a clinician.

Feel & Fit

How cool or hot does it sleep?

The Purple Mattress should feel cool for an all-foam bed because air can move through its open grid. NapLab gave cooling 10 out of 10, TechRadar gave temperature control 5 out of 5, and Sleepopolis gave it 3.5 out of 5. Those results support the grid's airflow claim, though a hybrid with coils may breathe better. If you sleep hot, this is a cooler-feeling foam option, not a promise that you will never wake warm.

Will you feel your partner move?

You may feel larger movements more than small ones. NapLab described its motion result as excellent isolation and scored it 10 out of 10, while Sleepopolis gave motion isolation 2.7 out of 5. Mattress Nerd also says the grid's bounce may bother light sleepers. The results do not line up because test methods differ; they still point to the same tradeoff: the bed is easy to move on, but a restless partner could disturb you. Try it with a partner if motion is a concern.

Price & Buying

Sizes, heights and prices: is it worth the money?

Purple showed one Queen price, $1,599, on Oct 2, 2026, with no separate list price. Treat these as dated prices, not a current promise. The mattress is 9.25 inches tall. Prices observed during the sale were:

SizeSale priceList price
Twin$799$1,099
Twin XL$999$1,299
Full$1,199$1,499
Queen$1,299$1,599
King$1,899$2,199
Cal King$1,899$2,199
Split King$1,998$2,598

The sale lowers its list price, but the thin build and weak edge may make it poor value if you want a deeper cradle or strong edge support.

Where can you buy or try it?

The Purple Mattress is sold on Purple's site and at Purple stores and authorized retailers such as Mattress Firm. Purple says its mattresses can be tried at more than 3,400 locations; check that the shop has this model on display before going. Build & Safety

How is it built?

This model has a SoftFlex cover over a 2-inch GelFlex Grid, a layer of gel-like columns that bend under weight, then comfort foam, base support foam, and edge foam. It has no coils. Purple does not give the foam layers' thicknesses. It stands 9.25 inches tall. A Queen is 60 by 80 inches and weighs 110 pounds. Listed dimensions are:

  • Twin: 38 by 75 inches
  • Twin XL: 38 by 80 inches
  • Full: 54 by 75 inches
  • King: 76 by 80 inches
  • Cal King: 72 by 84 inches
  • Split King is offered, but its dimensions were not listed.

Tom's Guide lists weights of 70 pounds for Twin XL, 81 for Full, 110 for Queen, and 140 for King and Cal King. It gives no weight for Twin or Split King. Standard deep-pocket sheets fit; Purple recommends stretchy sheets so the grid can flex.

Materials and certifications

Purple says its foam is CertiPUR-US certified. That label covers some foam contents and emissions. Purple also calls its materials non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and Clean-Air Gold. The Clean-Air Gold standard was not checked independently. NapLab noticed a new smell for 4 days in its test. Purple says a new mattress smell should fade within days. CertiPUR-US does not say what is in the fire barrier.

Build & Safety

Does The Purple Mattress have fiberglass?

Purple says this model has no fiberglass. Its product page calls the barrier a fiberglass-free fire sock, and the help page says the sock sits beneath the cover. A third-party guide describes its silica knit. The law tag sewn on your mattress is the best place to check your own unit because materials can change. Read its filling line, and do not open the cover to inspect the barrier.

Build & Safety

What bed base does it need?

Purple says to use a solid surface, slats spaced less than 3.5 inches apart, or an adjustable base tested to support at least 750 pounds. It says not to use a box spring. Mattress Nerd adds that Queen and larger frames should have at least five legs, including a center support. If the frame is weak or unsupported, Purple says a sag claim can be denied. Check your base before the bed arrives.

How long will it last, and does it need flipping or rotating?

Sleep Foundation estimates that The Purple Mattress may last about 6 to 7 years. That is a site estimate, not a promise. Purple asks you to give the bed 21 nights for your body to adjust. It is one-sided, so do not flip it. Purple does not publish a rotation schedule in the sources checked. Purple's 10-year warranty covers defects under its terms, not normal wear or a change in comfort.

Trials, returns and fees

The bed comes with 100 nights to try from delivery. Purple requires a separate 21-night wait before you can send it back or exchange it. The Purple Mattress is in the Essential group, whose returns carry a $150 transport charge. Purple arranges pickup, and the law tag must stay attached. An exchange can add shipping, transport, or upgrade costs. Retailer orders can have different return terms, so check the seller before buying.

What does the warranty cover, and what voids it?

The Purple Mattress has a 10-year limited warranty for the original buyer. Purple covers manufacturing flaws and a visible dip deeper than 1 inch after the mattress has recovered from pressure. The warranty can end if ownership changes, the law tag is removed, the bed is stained, or the base does not give proper support. For a claim after the first 100 days, Purple charges transport. Read Purple's full terms before a claim.

What do owners like and complain about?

Purple's product page shows 4.5 out of 5 from 29,566 ratings, its own review pool. Purple customer reviews praise the cool, floating feel and pressure relief. NapLab scored its edge support as weak, and Sleepopolis found mixed motion results. Purple's score comes from its own site, while the test sites rate the mattress separately.

How does The Purple Mattress compare?

The Purple Mattress comes in one feel and uses foam around a grid. PurplePlus keeps the grid but adds more cushioning and a taller profile, while PurpleFlex has a firmer, thinner feel. Pick PurplePlus if you want more cushion, PurpleFlex if you want a firmer, lower-priced choice, or this model if you want a medium-firm grid without extra layers. Try each feel first if the grid is new to you.
