Portland Mattress Makers Review

Portland Mattress Makers has built mattresses by hand in Maine since 1938. Its Biddeford factory makes innerspring, foam, latex and pocket-coil hybrid beds. It sells factory-direct through six New England stores. You'll find flippable two-sided builds, non-prorated warranties of 8 to 10 years, and no-pressure local service. Prices run mid to premium, and delivery is regional. It suits you best if you live near a store and want to talk to the people who build your bed.

Checked September 2026 against the brand's own pages and public listings. We haven't sleep-tested these mattresses, so treat this as a buyer's summary of what the brand publishes.

Which mattress suits your sleep needs?

If you're a firm back or stomach sleeper, look at Acadia, Sebago Lake, Boothbay Firm or New Castle Firm. If you're a side sleeper who needs pressure relief, try Acadia Pillow Top, with or without latex. You could also try Belgrade Plush, Boothbay Grand Plush or Pillow Top, Monhegan Talalay or New Castle Plush.

If you sleep hot, choose a latex option. The brand says latex breathes better than most foams. Those are the Monhegan line, Boothbay Latex or Natural Latex, and Acadia Pillow Top with Latex. Couples should look at Belgrade, which has low motion transfer per the brand, or the Boothbay Combo. Latex purists can choose Monhegan Dunlop (firmer) or Talalay (medium-firm). They're both stated 100 percent natural and double-sided. That's a plus if you want flippable latex. On a budget, start with Sebago Lake, then New Castle.

The brand offers custom sizes, two-piece and hinged box springs for tight staircases, low-profile box springs and comfort customizations. Custom sizes need a 50 percent non-refundable deposit, and they aren't covered by the comfort guarantee.

Mattress prices and value

Listed prices on portlandmattressmakers.com in September 2026: Sebago Lake $630 to $1,200 (Plush from $1,400, Pillow Top from $1,500). New Castle Firm $850 to $1,700 and Plush $950 to $1,900. Boothbay base $1,430 to $2,800 and Boothbay Latex $1,680 to $3,300. Belgrade $1,680 to $3,250 and Belgrade Plush $1,780 to $3,500. Boothbay Combo and Pillow Top $1,780 to $3,500.

Acadia is $1,480 to $2,550, Acadia Plush $1,780 to $2,850 and Acadia Pillow Top $1,880 to $3,150. Monhegan Dunlop is $1,800 to $3,600. Acadia Pillow Top with Latex is $2,080 to $3,500. Boothbay Grand Plush is $2,280 to $4,400. Monhegan Talalay is $2,300 to $4,500. Boothbay Natural Latex is $2,430 to $4,700.

The brand says its factory-direct pricing beats comparable national brands. It says two-sided flippable models cost more to make than one-sided ones but last longer. Softer models cost more than firm ones because they use more padding. You buy by contacting the brand, not through an online cart. Confirm current size-level pricing in a store.

What are the mattresses made of?

Innerspring lines use a 660-coil innerspring (Acadia) or a Verticoil innerspring with metal edge guards (Sebago Lake). They're topped with high-density and high-grade foams. Acadia models are double-sided. Pocket-coil hybrids (Boothbay, New Castle) pair fabric-wrapped coils with high-density foam, memory foam, latex or combos. Boothbay offers stronger support, while New Castle is tuned for deeper hip contour.

The Belgrade foam line uses a firm high-density support base with medium-firm and innovative foam-feel comfort layers. They're designed to mimic foam without the heat sensitivity or deep sink. Monhegan latex is stated 100 percent natural, in Dunlop (firmer, denser) or Talalay (medium-firm, responsive) builds. Both are double-sided.

The factory quilts panels from foam, fiber and wool and assembles comfort layers to springs on site. A CertiPUR-US logo appears on official foam pages. We found no GOTS, GOLS or OEKO-TEX wording on the pages we reviewed (checked September 2026).

How well do the mattresses hold up?

The durability story rests on double-sided, flippable construction. Acadia, Monhegan and other two-sided models can be flipped for even wear. A 10-year non-prorated warranty backs Acadia, Boothbay, Monhegan and New Castle. Sebago Lake gets an 8-year non-prorated warranty. It covers workmanship and materials with repair or replacement. Surface body impressions under 1.5 inches are deemed normal, not defects.

To keep coverage, use correct bed frame support: five legs minimum for full and queen, six for king. Never fold or bend the mattress, and keep it reasonably clean. Belgrade's warranty years aren't stated on its model pages, so confirm before you buy. The brand doesn't publish independent long-term durability testing (checked September 2026).

Customer reviews and complaints

The on-site Google review widget shows 4.9 stars across 237 reviews. Reviewers often praise no-pressure, knowledgeable salespeople, quality materials and craftsmanship. They also like the fast made-to-order turnaround and friendly, professional delivery crews. Several are repeat buyers.

Recurring complaints are prices higher than big-box equivalents, plus a few delivery gripes. One was a property-damage incident the company paid to repair. In another, a crew tracked snow inside. The brand notes softer models cost more due to extra padding, which explains some price surprise. We found no independent ratings on BBB, Yelp, GoodBed or major review outlets (checked September 2026).

Where can you try and buy?

You can try and buy only through the brand. The factory and showroom is in Biddeford, Maine (25 Edwards Avenue, 207-282-9583). Stores are in Portland, Maine (107 Fox Street, 207-772-2276), Portsmouth, NH (990 Lafayette Road, 603-501-0707) and Bedford, NH (1 South River Road, 603-782-8610). Others are in Andover, MA (Shawsheen Plaza, 209 North Main Street, 978-824-5100) and Littleton, MA (The Point, 620 Constitution Avenue).

Product pages say Contact Us To Buy, so there isn't an online cart. Most twin and full sizes are kept in stock, and made-to-order builds usually take a day or two. We found no Amazon, Wayfair, Costco or other third-party listings (checked September 2026).

Delivery, setup and removal

Professional delivery covers Maine, New Hampshire and parts of Massachusetts. It includes setup of your new set and old-set removal within a two-hour window. Ask the store about details and pricing. Mattresses and box springs ship outside Maine at roughly $200 to the door within New England. Pricing outside New England varies by location. In-home delivery, setup and old-set removal outside the local zone cost extra.

The brand also builds two-piece queen and full box springs and hinged mattresses for narrow staircases on request. It doesn't publish exact delivery fees, zones or old-mattress recycling terms beyond this, so confirm with the store (checked September 2026).

Sleep trial and returns

You get a 30-Day Comfort Guarantee. Sleep on the mattress a full 30 nights. If you don't love it, request an exchange before 60 days. These are exchanges only. You can't get a comfort return. You get one exchange, with a $99 exchange fee plus any price difference for a higher-priced model and delivery charges.

Comfort exchanges exclude mismatched sets, polyurethane foam and custom-sized mattresses. Custom orders take a 50 percent non-refundable deposit but may be rebuilt to a different comfort for a fee. Outright refunds carry a 20 percent restocking fee plus delivery charges. There are no refunds on pillows, mattress pads, custom sizes or polyurethane foam. The brand doesn't offer a 100-night free-return trial.

Warranty

The Full Coverage Non-Prorated Warranty gives Acadia, Boothbay, Monhegan and New Castle 10 years. Sebago Lake gets 8 years. It covers workmanship and materials, with repair or replacement at no charge.

It doesn't cover surface body impressions under 1.5 inches, which are normal contouring, especially on pillow-tops. It excludes damage from improper support: full and queen frames need at least five legs, and kings at least six. Folded or bent mattresses are out. So are claims on excessively stained mattresses, so use a protector. Custom sizes need a 50 percent non-refundable deposit. The brand doesn't publish the full warranty text beyond the policy page summary (checked September 2026).

Portland Mattress Makers vs. other brands

Against national innerspring brands, the brand positions its two-sided flippable builds as longer lasting than mainstream one-sided models, at a lower factory-direct price. Against bed-in-a-box brands, you get no compressed shipping or online checkout. You do get a locally built bed, in-store testing and staff who build the product.

Against latex specialists, Monhegan competes on 100 percent natural Dunlop or Talalay double-sided latex, with local service instead of nationwide shipping. Against budget chains, Sebago Lake and New Castle cover value. Customers say big-box prices still undercut it. The brand doesn't publish head-to-head third-party comparisons (checked September 2026).
