MTJ American Mattress Review

MTJ American is an institutional mattress maker in Hudson, North Carolina. It's an LLC with over 15 years in business. It sells 21 made-to-order beds direct, from $69 to $293. The lines cover detention, behavioral health, college, military, camp and shelter use. They come in bunk and dorm sizes, not consumer queen or king sizes. You won't get a sleep trial or returns. Warranties cover seams only and run 1 to 5 years. If you're shopping for a home, this isn't your brand. If you buy for a facility, it's worth a look.

Checked September 2026 against the brand's own pages and public listings. We haven't sleep-tested these mattresses, so treat this as a buyer's summary of what the brand publishes.

Which mattress suits your sleep needs?

MTJ sells no home bed sizes, so the advice here is about setting and body weight. For college, the Innerspring College Mattress at $219 gives you a firm, supported bed with a flexible edge. The Dual-Density Foam College Mattress from $222 suits all-foam fans who want to flip it for a firmer or softer face.

Back sleepers get the most support from the innerspring and the 8 in foam beds. MTJ says these beat the 6 in mattresses most rivals sell. The military beds are reversible and under 30 lb, so one person can flip them. Camp beds from $193 suit children. MTJ suggests nylon for older campers and vinyl for younger ones or higher fluid risk.

For detention, higher-risk inmates point to Secure Advantage from $121 or Secure Clear from $108. If staff need quick searches, take Clear Advantage or Secure Clear. Fusion Advantage from $127 is the comfort pick. In behavioral health, Fusion Dual Density from $250 serves both firm and soft preferences. Sealed Fusion from $250 is all foam. Sewn Dual-Density from $273 fits only low-contamination settings.

MTJ publishes no weight ratings. If you're a heavier adult, skip the 4.5 in to 5 in fiber beds and step up to the 8 in innerspring or 8 in dual-density foam. You won't find plush pressure relief, a pillow top or motion isolation for two adults here.

Mattress prices and value

We checked the live storefront prices on 22 September 2026. The 21 mattresses run from $69 to $293. Detention beds are the cheapest. Econo Safe is $69 to $79. Econo Clear is $75 to $86. Value Safe Detention is $96 to $110. Clear Advantage and Secure Clear are $108 to $124. Secure Advantage is $121 to $139. Fusion Advantage is $127 to $143. Behavioral health runs $248 to $293. College and military run $200 to $239. Camp runs $193 to $255. Shelter runs $96 to $139.

Price follows width and thickness. A 25 in bed costs $69 to $127, and a 30 in bed costs $79 to $143. The patented built-in full-size pillow adds $2 to $3. There are no sales, coupons, bundles, membership pricing or financing. MTJ also runs a Wholesale Gorilla trade portal that holds inventory reservations for 60 days, so the list prices likely aren't net prices for volume buyers.

The brand does not publish freight costs, volume discounts or minimum order sizes (checked September 2026). You can't work out landed cost from the site. MTJ argues that its encapsulated innerspring lasts longer than a cheaper border rod bed, so you replace it less often. Comparing it with a $1,000 residential queen isn't fair. You get one flat 4.5 in to 8 in slab, with no comfort layers, no trial and no returns.

What are the mattresses made of?

MTJ makes every mattress to order at its plant at 4276 Helena Street, Hudson, North Carolina, and says all of them are made in the US. There are three core types. Polyfiber cores (5 in compressed to 4.5 in) are in the detention and Value Safe Shelter beds, plus a 12 oz core in the Waterproof Shelter. Foam cores are medium-density, high-density or dual-density polyurethane, described as 100% CertiPUR-US or US-CertiPur. Innerspring cores use steel coils, either with a border rod or encapsulated with foam rails.

There are four cover types. College, military and border rod beds use 210 denier fluid-proof coated nylon in navy blue with a hexagonal rip-stop pattern. Fusion Advantage, Sealed Fusion and the camp nylon bed use thermal polyurethane-coated nylon that MTJ calls pinhole-free. Searchable detention beds use clear vinyl. Budget detention, shelter, camp vinyl and Sealed Value Safe beds use green or navy vinyl. The Sewn Dual-Density bed uses a honeycomb 210 denier fabric chosen for softness.

Every cover has a fungistatic treatment. The nylon college, military and foam models also carry an antimicrobial treatment. MTJ cites AATCC Methods 30-1988, 147-1998 and 100-1999, and a Draize skin irritation result of non-allergenic. Seams are RF-welded (over 52 or 60 lb per inch) on detention and shelter beds, and sewn on college, military and border rod beds.

MTJ lists California Technical Bulletin 129 and 603, 16 CFR Part 1632 and 1633, Fed Std 191, NFPA 701 and CAL 117. Innerspring and dual-density foam college and military beds also list the BFD IX-11 fire test. MTJ says every mattress is 100 percent recyclable. It uses no latex, wool, organic cotton, gel, phase-change material, copper or graphite. The brand does not publish foam densities or third-party certifications such as GREENGUARD, GOLS, GOTS or OEKO-TEX (checked September 2026).

How well do the mattresses hold up?

Durability is MTJ's whole pitch. Its tagline is Mattresses That Last. The 210 denier hexagonal nylon cover is rated 40% stronger in tear strength than standard nylon. The thermal nylon covers won't crack over time. The clear and vinyl detention covers resist delaminating, and rip-proof versions can't be torn by hand even after a puncture.

MTJ's own blog says a border rod bends easily and stays bent. It can puncture the cover and bring replacement sooner. The brand still sells that design. It says an encapsulated innerspring lasts longer. It also warns that diluted disinfectants can strip the antimicrobial treatment and cause cracking. Use 25 percent mild detergent and 75 percent distilled water instead.

The brand does not publish expected lifespan, weight ratings, fatigue testing or independent durability tests (checked September 2026). The only numbers are seam strengths of more than 52 or 60 lb per inch. The 1-year to 5-year seam warranty is far shorter than the 10-year to lifetime terms common for home mattresses. If you're buying for a household, a 4.5 in polyfiber slab with a 1-year seam warranty isn't a decade-long bed.

Customer reviews and complaints

You'll find almost no consumer reviews of MTJ American. That's expected for a maker that sells to jails, prisons, colleges, camps and shelters. Its storefront has no review app, so none of the 21 mattresses has an on-site rating. We found no Trustpilot or Sitejabber profile, no Google ratings, no editorial reviews, no YouTube reviews and no Reddit threads. We found no Better Business Bureau profile, rating or complaint count either.

The one independent source is USAspending.gov. It lists MTJ AMERICAN LLC, UEI M66NJGK98648, DUNS 808178037, at 4276 Helena St, Hudson, NC 28638, as a small business, manufacturer and US-owned LLC. It shows 391 federal contract awards. Recipient-level data shows 34 transactions totalling $8,511,051.20. Department of Justice amounts total $16,074,060.95 from 2007 to 2026. Other totals are Department of Defense $259,735.60, Veterans Affairs $5,701.60 and Homeland Security $2,160.00.

Most of the money went through the Prison Industries Fund ($9,505,599.58), Marine Corps operation and maintenance ($42,400) and Federal Prison System salaries and expenses ($30,195). Under NAICS 337910 Mattress Manufacturing, awards total $12,048,517.69. Large awards include $308,548.85 in 2019, $258,482.44 in 2017, $244,922.50 in January 2026, $243,586.94 and $186,692.08 in 2016, $179,677.68 in 2020 and $160,646.70 in 2024. They were for vent sealed material for bedding and medical grade fabric. We found no complaints, FTC actions or recalls. With no consumer channel, the silence isn't proof of satisfaction. The repeat federal buying is the stronger trust signal.

Where can you try and buy?

You buy direct from the maker at mtjamerican.com, a Shopify store with all 21 mattresses priced and orderable online. There's no showroom, no retail partner and no Amazon, Walmart or Wayfair listing. The plant and office are at 4276 Helena Street Suite 5, Hudson, NC 28638. Call 1-828-396-1537, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4:30pm Eastern. For order problems, email davidl@mtjamerican.com. MTJ takes custom sizes, colors and builds by request.

Trade buyers get a Wholesale Gorilla portal. It has account approval, a wholesale catalog, tax-exempt status for approved accounts, a Quick Order Form and 60-day inventory reservation. The store accepts American Express, Apple Pay, Diners Club, Discover, Google Pay, Mastercard, PayPal, Shop Pay, Venmo and Visa. The terms also allow payment by check. If a check doesn't clear, you cover collection costs, including attorney fees. You also owe 1.5 percent interest per month and liquidated damages of double the bill, under N.C.G.S. 6-21.2.

MTJ AMERICAN LLC holds 391 federal contract awards, mostly with Federal Prison Industries / UNICOR and the Bureau of Prisons. That's $16.07 million in Department of Justice amounts from 2007 to 2026. A blog by David Lezette covers RF welded seams, rip-proof covers, antimicrobial fabrics, innerspring types and cleaning. The site says only that MTJ has made specialty mattresses for over 15 years. It doesn't publish a founding date, ownership, headcount or revenue.

Delivery, setup and removal

Delivery is by freight and made to order. MTJ's policy says orders need a minimum of 2 weeks to produce. Freight then takes upwards of 3 to 5 days, depending on destination. MTJ is East Coast based. It suggests ordering before camp begins. The brand does not publish shipping costs, free shipping thresholds, carriers, delivery regions or liftgate terms (checked September 2026). Cart rate requests for North Carolina and California returned no rates, so shipping is likely quoted at order.

You won't get white-glove delivery, setup, unboxing or old-mattress removal. You'll have to dispose of your old bed yourself. MTJ notes that its mattresses are accepted at most mattress recycling facilities. The brand does not publish a foundation or base requirement. Shelter beds are made to lie directly on the floor, and the waterproof one weighs under 20 lb. College and military beds weigh under 30 lb, so one person can flip them.

These beds aren't compressed or boxed. They arrive as finished slabs. If you're a household buyer, expect to pay freight, wait about two and a half weeks and handle everything else yourself.

Sleep trial and returns

There's no sleep trial, return window or exchange program. MTJ's refund policy says all sales are final. It doesn't refund or accept returns because every mattress is custom and made to order. The brand does not publish restocking fees or return shipping terms, since it takes no returns (checked September 2026).

Your only recourse is a defect claim. Inspect the order when it arrives. If an item is defective, damaged or incorrect, contact MTJ right away at davidl@mtjamerican.com or 1-828-396-1537. If you need to fix a wrong size or change your mind, contact MTJ before production. The brand does not publish a cancellation window.

That means you can't try a bed and send it back. Measure your bed frame before you order. Institutional buyers face the same online terms, though a purchase order or the wholesale portal may carry separate terms.

Warranty

Warranty coverage is thin and limited to seam bonding. The terms say all MTJ American mattresses carry a warranty against manufacturing defects. The brand doesn't publish a warranty page (checked September 2026). Each product page lists seam bonding terms. Five years covers the Sealed Foam Core Camp Mattress with Nylon Cover. Three years covers Fusion Advantage, Secure Advantage (also reinforced with internal stitching), Waterproof Shelter and Sealed Fusion Behavioral Health. Two years covers Clear Advantage and Secure Clear. One year covers Econo Safe, Econo Clear, Value Safe Detention, Value Safe Shelter, Sealed Value Safe Behavioral Health and the camp vinyl bed.

The brand does not publish a warranty for the Sewn Dual-Density and Fusion Dual Density behavioral health beds. The same goes for the Dual-Density Foam College, Innerspring College, Dual-Density Foam Military, InnerSpring Military, Border Rod Innerspring and Home Advantage Healthcare mattresses. That's eight of the 21 models. No published warranty covers sagging, foam loss, cover cracking, delamination, punctures, rips, the breathable vent, the fire barrier or the built-in pillow. It doesn't state a proration schedule, transferability or voiding conditions.

To make a claim, call 1-828-396-1537 or email davidl@mtjamerican.com. If you're used to a 10-year or lifetime warranty covering sags deeper than 1.5 in, this is a different kind of protection. Institutional buyers should confirm coverage in writing when they place the purchase order.

MTJ American vs. other brands

MTJ doesn't compete with home brands such as Saatva, Tempur-Pedic, Nectar, Purple or Tuft and Needle. Those brands win on home fit. They offer queen and king sizes, layered comfort, trials of 100 nights or more, free returns, 10-year to lifetime warranties and white-glove delivery. MTJ wins on price, from $69 against $600 and up for the cheapest residential queen. It also offers features home brands don't, such as clear covers for searches and rip-proof fabric. A household shouldn't buy MTJ, and a facility shouldn't buy a Saatva.

Against other institutional suppliers, MTJ cites direct-from-maker pricing, US manufacturing, custom sizes and colors, and a patented breathable vent. It says competitors' sealed covers generally lack that vent. It also says rivals use cotton and low-density polyester cores and sell 6 in mattresses. MTJ offers high-density and dual-density CertiPUR-US foam, innerspring and 8 in models. Every bed is a flat slab with no comfort layering and only a 1-year to 5-year seam warranty. MTJ's blog also argues the cheapest institutional bed is a false economy, yet its own $69 to $96 models are that product.

We found no lab testing or editorial comparison of MTJ against any rival, so these claims come from MTJ's marketing. The one neutral signal is federal buying. MTJ has 391 awards and $16.07 million in Department of Justice amounts from 2007 to 2026. Most are with Federal Prison Industries / UNICOR and the Bureau of Prisons.

How we put this review together

We read the brand's own product, policy and warranty pages, then checked retailer listings and public complaint sites like the Better Business Bureau. We last checked everything here in September 2026. Prices and policies change, so confirm them on the seller's page before you buy. You can read more in our methodology and editorial policy.
