McRoskey Mattress Review
McRoskey is a San Francisco mattress maker that has operated since 1899 and is still run by the fourth generation of the family. It hand-builds seven two-sided, all-natural mattresses, six Modern and one Classic. You'll buy through Northern California showrooms, with quote-only pricing and no published sleep trial. Each bed is built to order in 3 to 4 weeks and has a 10-year warranty. It suits you if you live nearby and want a luxury handmade bed. The big catch is that you can only buy in person, and only in the region.

Which mattress suits your sleep needs?
If you sleep on your side, start with Gentle in the Cole Valley, St. Francis or Pacific Heights. They give the deepest natural pressure relief. Presidio in Extra Gentle suits you if you want a plush platform bed. If you sleep on your back, Relaxed is the middle-ground starting point across most Modern models.
If you sleep on your stomach or you're a heavier sleeper, look at Firm over the pocketed-coil base. The brand doesn't publish weight limits, ILDs, coil counts or a firmness map by model (checked September 2026), so test them in the store. Mission's open-coil build feels livelier, per the brand. Every model is two-sided and flippable, which helps even out wear.
Mattress prices and value
McRoskey doesn't publish prices on its site, and GoodBed lists the Queen MSRP as N/A. You'll get a quote through a showroom or retailer. The brand does not publish price bands (checked September 2026). Expect luxury handmade pricing, in line with San Francisco-built two-sided natural beds.
Pocketed-coil box springs come in 6-inch, 8-inch and 11-inch heights, and a king is split in two. If you skip the McRoskey box spring, the bed feels firmer than it did in the showroom. Custom sizes cost extra and take longer. The value is fair if you want heritage and hand-tufted construction. It's weak next to rivals that publish prices, trials and specs online.
What are the mattresses made of?
The brand says the Modern Collection is 100% natural, double-sided, hand-layered and hand-tufted. It claims no foams, adhesives, toxic materials, chemical flame retardants or off-gassing substances. Layers vary by model. They include California Supima cotton, fine-combed cashmere, alpaca fleece and EcoWool. Select models add organic cotton. Others use all-natural Talalay latex, from 1 to 5 inches by model, plus horsehair or horsetail and a Tencel blend (St. Francis).
You'll also find Softech microcoils and NanoCoils on select models, over a proprietary hand-built pocketed innerspring. Design details include Framing Fog woven ticking, hand-applied metal airlets, double box-stitched handles, a self-welt edge and leather or woven labels. The Classic Mission has a heritage open-coil innerspring with Supima or organic cotton and EcoWool. The brand does not publish third-party certifications such as GOTS, GOLS or OEKO-TEX (checked September 2026).
How well do the mattresses hold up?
The brand points to a limited 10-year non-prorated warranty. It covers sag or body impressions over 1.5 inches with proper support. The two-sided build and a quarterly flip and rotate routine are meant to even out wear. The care page asks for a rigid four-sided or slatted frame, with platform slats no more than 2.5 inches apart. Stains, water damage and mildew void coverage.
The brand does not publish independent durability testing, coil counts, gauges or densities (checked September 2026). We found no verified long-term owner data either. So you can't count on a lifespan beyond the 10-year warranty window.
Customer reviews and complaints
We found no aggregate customer ratings in September 2026. The GoodBed brand page shows zero reviews. The brand does not publish star ratings, review counts, BBB data or editorial lab scores. Its model pages show no review widgets. Praise themes come from brand marketing, not independent reviews: handcrafted comfort, heritage quality and natural materials.
We couldn't verify any complaint themes. The risks to check in the store are quote-only pricing, no published trial and the 3 to 4 week build wait. Treat satisfaction evidence as absent, not positive.
Where can you try and buy?
You can try and buy at McRoskey showrooms and authorized retailers in Northern California. Use the Find a Retailer or Find a Store locator on mcroskey.com. GoodBed notes company-owned stores in Northern California. Wikipedia places the main display site at 2233 Alameda St., San Francisco. You can email Info@McRoskey.com.
The brand does not publish online checkout, cart pricing or a direct shipping flow (checked September 2026). It doesn't publish a phone number or hours either, so confirm them through the store locator. Wikipedia notes manufacturing was sold to Pleasant Mattress Company. GoodBed says Pleasant has built the beds since 2019, and the warranty text names Pleasant Mattress Inc.
Delivery, setup and removal
Each bed is built to order. Standard sizes take 3 to 4 weeks, and custom sizes need extra time and cost. White-glove delivery is included in the surrounding area, with takeaway of your old mattress or box spring. If you're outside the local area, you'll need to call to coordinate, and costs aren't published.
The brand does not publish shipping speeds, tracking or nationwide delivery (checked September 2026). For setup, pocketed-coil box springs come in 6, 8 and 11-inch heights, with the king split in two. Presidio is made for platform beds with no box spring. Your frame must support all four sides, or use rigid no-sag slats no more than 2.5 inches apart.
Sleep trial and returns
The brand does not publish a sleep trial, return window, exchange policy or restocking fee schedule (checked September 2026). The warranty excludes comfort and firmness preference, so firmness regret isn't a warranty fix. Any returns or exchanges seem to be at your retailer's discretion.
Because it's built to order, get trial, exchange, pickup and fee terms in writing from your showroom before you order.
Warranty
The McRoskey Mattress Works limited warranty runs 10 years, non-prorated. It covers mattresses, box springs and foundations. It starts on delivery day and applies to the original purchaser only. It covers body impressions or sag over 1.5 inches with continuous proper support. Queen and king sizes need rigid center support down to the floor. It also covers loose or protruding coils or wires, bent, loose or split foundation beams, foundation compression or un-stapling, and other defects the maker determines.
It excludes transport costs, impressions under 1.5 inches and bent border wires. Floor-model, As-Is and Close-Out pieces aren't covered. Neither are comfort or firmness preference, sheet fit, stains, soil, mildew, removed law labels or misuse. Claims go through your retailer, or McRoskey Mattress Works Customer Service if the retailer has closed. You'll need your original receipt. A repair or replacement doesn't extend the term, and comparable materials or models may be substituted.
McRoskey vs. other brands
Against Aireloom and Kluft, the California luxury handmade makers, McRoskey wins on two-sided flippable builds and the San Francisco story. It loses on dealer reach and published specs. Against Shifman, which is also a two-sided luxury innerspring, both are flippable and have heritage. McRoskey leans on natural fibers and latex, while Shifman publishes more construction detail.
Against Avocado and Naturepedic, the certified-organic online brands, McRoskey wins on bespoke hand-tufting. It loses on third-party certifications, published prices, trials and nationwide shipping. Against Saatva, the luxury online brand, Saatva wins on clear pricing, a 365-night trial and white-glove delivery nationwide. McRoskey wins on two-sided longevity and natural-materials purity if you can buy locally.
