Mattress Makers Review

Mattress Makers isn't one national brand. It's four independent factory-direct makers in San Diego, Maine, Tampa Bay and Houston that share a generic name. Together they cover organic latex, latex hybrids, flippables, hotel-style coils and budget foam. Prices run from about $249 to over $4,500. Each builds in a local workshop, with in-store fitting and comfort guarantees instead of boxed shipping. You'll need to check each maker's own terms, because there's no shared site, cart or trial.

Checked September 2026 against the brand's own pages and public listings. We haven't sleep-tested these mattresses, so treat this as a buyer's summary of what the brand publishes.

If you sleep on your side or have pressure points, look at the San Diego Coronado in Soft or Medium. Other options are Tampa Belleair medium, Texas Hybrid Plus Natural Soft or Portland Monhegan medium-firm Talalay. If you sleep on your back or stomach, try Solana Firm or Cushion Firm dense Dunlop. For guest rooms, rentals and tight budgets, try Texas Guest Foam or TMM Value, Tampa Value Collection from $249 or Portland Sebago Lake. The makers don't publish exact ILDs or sleeper-position guidance beyond this (checked September 2026).

What are the mattresses made of?

San Diego uses Talalay plus Dunlop latex, cotton, wool and a TENCEL cover. Badges cited include Eco Institut, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, GOLS, CertiPUR-US and CoolTENCEL. The zip-top removable cover has swappable layers. Portland uses a 660-coil innerspring with high-density foam (Acadia), 100 percent Talalay latex (Monhegan) and Verticoil with metal edge guards (Sebago Lake). All are double-sided and flippable. Portland's certifications aren't published (checked September 2026).

Tampa uses an 8 in base of coils plus 1 in micro-coils, up to 3,047 in total. It adds 1 in of 32 ILD natural latex, 4.5-lb gel memory foam, a cotton-Tencel quilt top and a wood-rayon fire barrier. It claims CertiPUR-US, GREENGUARD Gold and Forest Stewardship Council credentials. Texas uses pocketed coils, latex (Hybrid Plus Natural), gel memory foam, foam-encased edges and Sereni Sleep fire fiber. It claims 100k-cycle third-party durability testing on Hotel Comfort. Full foam densities and ILDs aren't published.

How well do the mattresses hold up?

San Diego backs latex builds for 25 years and non-latex for 10 years against defects and impressions over 1.5 in. Comfort re-tuning lets layers evolve instead of sagging out. Independent sag testing isn't published (checked September 2026). Portland offers 10-year non-prorated warranties on Acadia and Monhegan and 8-year non-prorated on Sebago Lake. Double-sided designs are meant to wear evenly.

Tampa gives 10-year non-prorated on Belleair, with tempered-steel coils and latex comfort layers. Texas ranges from 1-year prorated (Guest Foam) to 5-year prorated (Essential). Hotel Comfort gets 10-year prorated and Hybrid Plus Natural gets 10-year non-prorated. Long-term durability data from reviews isn't published.

Customer reviews and complaints

Portland shows the strongest evidence. It has about 4.9 stars across Biddeford (237 reviews), Portland ME (506), Portsmouth (290), Bedford (160) and Andover (101). Reviewers praise no-pressure help, made-to-order quality and tidy delivery crews with old-bed removal. They also mention a coffee gift and a handwritten note. Complaints are mostly price ("Quality is not cheap"), plus occasional delivery scuffs or stairway fit issues, usually resolved by exchange.

Tampa cites 2026 Best Custom and RV Mattress recognition from Sleep Doctor and Sleep Foundation. We didn't extract star averages. Texas shows a testimonials page but no star scores or counts, so satisfaction is brand-reported only. San Diego product pages showed Sold Out variants with no ratings. We found no third-party BBB, Trustpilot or Google complaint counts (checked September 2026).

Mattress Makers vs. other brands

Against national bed-in-a-box brands like Casper, Purple and Nectar, these makers offer in-person fitting, custom sizes, split feels and comfort re-tuning. You don't get a shared online trial or nationwide free shipping. Against premium latex peers like Avocado, PlushBeds and Savvy Rest, San Diego and Tampa match on natural latex and certifications. They sell locally instead of shipping compressed.

Against local factory-direct rivals in each city, the pitch is the same: cut-the-middleman pricing and on-site builds. Compare warranty length, adjustment fees and delivery terms store by store. The makers don't publish head-to-head lab testing (checked September 2026).
