Joybed Mattress Review
Joybed makes foam-free, latex-free natural innerspring mattresses by hand in Grand Rapids, MI. It claims a mattress-factory heritage back to 1889 and has sold the Joybed line direct since 2019. You get a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover, wool, a firm feel, a 120-night trial, a 10-year warranty and free US shipping, from $475. The catch is that joybed.com is parked and joybeds.com is listed for sale (September 2026), so brand continuity is uncertain.

Which mattress suits your sleep needs?
The brand's FAQ says back or stomach sleepers and firm-mattress fans should pick the LX Luxury Firm (4/10) or LXP Medium-Firm (5/10). Side sleepers and anyone who wants a more conforming feel should pick the LXP Medium-Plush (7/10) or the LXC Medium-Plush bundle with the Dreamin' Vegan topper (7/10). Hot sleepers suit any model, because there's no foam and the cotton and wool breathe. Couples and edge users get a double column of edge coils. Heavier sleepers get the best support from the LX.
Third-party guidance is similar. Sleep Foundation rates the LX 7 to 8/10 for stomach sleepers and 7/10 for back sleepers. It drops to 5.5/10 for side sleepers. Sleep Advisor recommends the LX for eco shoppers, edge support and warm sleepers. It doesn't recommend it for light sleepers (motion transfer) or petite side sleepers. Mattress Nerd steers side sleepers to the LXP Medium-Firm, back sleepers to the LX and stomach sleepers to the LXC Medium-Firm.
Mattress prices and value
We read live option data from the joybeds.com product pages on Sept 22, 2026. The LX runs $475 to $900, the LXC $790 to $1,390 and the LXP $675 to $1,490. The product pages advertise From $475 (LX) and From $675 (LXP). The older comparison page still shows From $695 and From $990. Sleep Foundation lists $495 to $1,490 for the LX and $990 to $1,990 for the LXP. Treat exact pricing as stale or inconsistent.
Extras include the Dreamin' Vegan topper at $299 to $369, a wool pillow at $129 to $149 and an organic sheet set at $89 to $129. A foundation costs $249 to $349 (6 in and 9 in), a bed frame $89 and a mattress protector $169 to $199. Bundles are the Kids Bundle at $813, Essentials at $1,222 to $1,861, Premium at $1,338 to $1,889 and Sleep Cool at $547 to $759.
Financing includes Synchrony retail-card offers (6, 12, 36, 48 and 60 months, with a 29.99% variable APR noted as of 8/2/2026). Affirm offers 3, 6 and 12-month plans, and there's a 90-day lease-to-own option. As of late 2026, this is the cheapest no-foam, no-latex natural coil mattress we could find in the US. A queen LX runs around $650. Rival natural and latex queens run roughly $1,099 to $2,499 in the brand's own chart. The low price comes with one firm LX feel, a short size list and thin top padding that some owners can feel coils through.
What are the mattresses made of?
These are natural fibers over steel coils, with no foam and no latex. From the top down, you get a plant-fiber fire barrier woven from potato and bean leaves and stems, with no chemical flame retardants. Next come American cotton layers from a southern family-owned supplier, and California and Oregon wool. Individually pocketed coils sit below, with plant-based glue in the spring unit. The LX and LXC add a double edge column. The LXP adds a nano-coil transition layer, zoned coils and hand tufting.
Covers are 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton. It's a brushed weave on the LXC and a jacquard weave on the LXP. The brand stresses they aren't blended with polyester. Sourcing is cotton from Texas and Georgia, wool from California and Oregon, plant fiber from North Dakota and Idaho and recycled steel coils from Indiana. Amish wood foundations come from Ohio, and the mattresses are hand-built in Grand Rapids, MI.
The brand says the mattresses are over 99% natural by weight. The only synthetics are the coil wrap, bottom dust barrier and backing layers. Product pages put those at less than .01% of the mattress by weight, with a 99.9% renewable-materials claim. The mattresses are one-sided and can't be flipped.
How well do the mattresses hold up?
Sleep Foundation rates durability 7/10 and calls the lifespan impressive for the price. The brand argues cotton and wool hold their loft longer than foam, and that the LXP uses durable nano coils. The 10-year warranty signals confidence. You need a rigid supportive foundation or platform, with slats no more than 5 in apart and center support on Queen and King. You should spot clean only, rotate the bed regularly and use a protector.
Reviews show real risks. Owners report feeling coils through the thin top padding. Some mattresses arrive shorter or thinner than spec and take weeks to months for the natural fibers to fluff to full height. Height tolerance is plus or minus 1 in, and coils can shift together up to 4 inches in shipping. One 1-star reviewer reported a 2020 plush model whose center collapsed after 2.5 years. We found no independent durability lab data. No fiberglass is mentioned anywhere in the material lists.
Customer reviews and complaints
Brand-hosted reviews on joybeds.com/reviews show 830 rated reviews, with the latest dated September 2026. That's 640 five-star, 100 four-star, 63 three-star, 17 two-star and 10 one-star, an average of roughly 4.6/5. These are on-site and not independently verified. Sleep Advisor logs a 4.8/5 average customer rating. Mattress Nerd republishes 4.7 to 4.8/5 averages. Sleep Foundation's test team scores performance around 5.5 to 7/10. Its weakest marks are pressure relief (5.5/10) and motion isolation (6/10).
Trustpilot rates joybeds 3.3/5 from very few reviews, and the brand doesn't send review invitations. Its one detailed review gave 2 stars. It describes bulging, uncomfortable coils and a difficult charity-donation return routed through us-mattress.com, with the $139 fee, ending in a full refund. Reddit r/Mattress threads ('Joybed Review - Buyer beware' and 'Joybed opinions?') complain about still sleeping hot, insufficient support and coils reaching the top with no padding.
Repeat complaints are that it's too firm even in the plush option and that you feel coils under the surface. Others mention dimensions arriving short, the one-sided design, longer-than-promised delivery and price jumps on Twin XL and King. Praise themes are no off-gassing, cooling, natural materials, easy boxed setup and value.
Where can you try and buy?
You'll mostly buy direct at joybeds.com. The phone is 877-601-7035. Sales hours are Mon to Fri 10 to 9, Sat 10 to 8 and Sun 12 to 6 EST. Customer service is Mon to Fri 9 to 6 and Sat 10 to 6 EST. The only published try-in-person option is in the brand FAQ. If you're in Michigan, the mattresses are on display in US-Mattress retail stores. US-Mattress (us-mattress.com, a Michigan retailer) also sold Joybed online, and a Trustpilot reviewer bought through it. But our direct checks of us-mattress.com on Sept 22, 2026 failed with SSL handshake errors, so confirm before you travel.
We found no Amazon or Walmart Joybed listings on Sept 22, 2026. Amazon's 'joybed mattress' search returns 36 unrelated products. The brand doesn't publish a showroom, factory address or email address (checked September 2026). The site operator is Green Bed, LLC d/b/a Joybeds, and JJR IP Services, LLC holds the Joybeds trademarks. Buy with caution. joybed.com is parked, and joybeds.com is offered for sale on the SerpNames marketplace with the original content preserved. Verify who is actually fulfilling and servicing orders.
Delivery, setup and removal
Shipping is free by UPS or similar to the lower 48 states. Mattresses leave the warehouse in 1 to 2 business days and typically reach your front door in 3 to 5 business days. Alaska and Hawaii customers must call for a quote and are excluded from refunds. The mattress arrives compressed and rolled in a box (Twin and Twin XL box 16x16x41 in, Queen 17x17x65 in). You move it in, unbox it, unroll it and break the shrink wrap. It expands to about 90% within minutes, and full height takes days to weeks. If coils shift and the bed measures short, shake the corners.
In-cart upgrades include White Glove Delivery for $250, where the carrier brings it in and sets it up. White Glove Delivery with Removal is also $250 and hauls away the old mattress. The FAQ says these take 3 to 4 weeks, while bundle cart labels show front door and white glove at 2 to 3 weeks. Front-door delivery doesn't require you to be home. California orders state compliance with state mattress-removal rules.
Inspect it immediately and report any damage within 1 day of delivery. Refusing an order without notifying Joybed can trigger round-trip shipping plus a 25% restocking fee.
Sleep trial and returns
You get a 120-night in-home trial with a mandatory 30-night minimum before you can exchange or return. It's limited to one exchange or refund per household or address. You call 1-877-601-7035 by night 120. A free exchange to a more comfortable model is offered. A refund is the purchase price less 10% and a $139 processing fee, per the FAQ and returns page. There's no restocking charge, and you don't re-box or ship the mattress back.
You must donate the mattress to a local organized charity. Joybed helps you find one, and if none is available, you mail in the law tag. It must be in donation-suitable condition, with no damage, stains, tears, excessive odors or soiling. Exclusions apply. Financing fees already paid aren't refunded, and extra paid delivery fees are non-refundable. Refunds apply only to US deliveries excluding Alaska and Hawaii. Foundations are refundable only when bought with a mattress.
Linens and accessories carry their own 120-night in-home trial with free returns to a charity. That covers the Dreamin' Vegan topper, blanket and throw, wool topper, mattress protector and pad, organic sheet set and wool pillow. Third-party fee descriptions conflict. Mattress Nerd says $139 only, BedtimeReviews says $139 plus up to $250 restocking, and some on-site copy says a full refund. Get the fee confirmed in writing before you order.
Warranty
The 10-year limited warranty continues from the original purchase date, even after a repair or replacement. It goes to the original purchaser who bought from an authorized seller in the 50 United States. Claims outside the 50 US are excluded. It covers manufacturer defects in materials or workmanship, and body indentations of 1.5 in or greater.
It doesn't cover mattress fabric, impressions of 1.5 in or less, firmness preference, or bed height, length or width. It excludes stains, soilage, burns and bent border wires. It also excludes inadequate support from a weak foundation or improper frame. Queen and King need rigid center support, and any frame without a metal center support needs at least five 1x4 hardwood slats. Transportation or removal costs and soiled or stained defective products that can't be safely inspected are excluded too.
You must keep the white law label and trade labels. You must provide a receipt or other proof of date, place and purchase price, and follow the care and foundation instructions. Joybed will repair or replace at its option within a reasonable time and may substitute comparable materials or models. There are no consequential damages or monetary refunds. Service is arranged nationwide through 1-877-601-7035. Verify warranty enforceability while the domain is listed for sale.
Joybed vs. other brands
Joybed is the cheapest no-foam, no-latex natural coil mattress we found. A queen LX runs about $650. The brand's own chart shows rival queens at around $1,099 to $2,499. Sleep Foundation's comparison lists Birch at $1,099 to $1,799 and PlushBeds Botanical Bliss at $1,299 to $3,098, versus $495 to $1,490 for the Joybed LX. Joybed claims a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and Oregon Tilth wool certifications, and UC Davis wool toxicology testing. Its comparison page argues latex needs chemical curing agents and that GOLS permits some harmful substances and fillers.
Against it, competitors publish deeper certification sets, such as GOTS wool, GOLS, Rainforest Alliance, CertiPUR-US and Integrity NZ. Joybed states outright that its inner cotton and wool aren't organic certified, to keep prices down. The LX has one firm feel, while rivals offer multiple firmness options. Sleep Foundation's 5.5/10 pressure-relief score is below the average hybrid. LX size coverage is only 4 sizes. Unlike established rivals, the brand's domains are parked or for sale in September 2026. Net, it wins on price, breathability, no off-gassing and natural materials. It loses on pressure relief, size and certification depth, and carries brand-continuity risk.

Are the mattresses organic?
Only the cover is claimed to be GOTS-certified organic cotton. The FAQ says the inner cotton and wool are intentionally not organic certified. The wool is claimed to hold OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and Oregon Tilth certifications plus UC Davis toxicology testing. The brand doesn't publish certificate numbers (checked September 2026).
Is there any foam, latex or fiberglass?
There's no foam or latex in any model, and no fiberglass is mentioned anywhere. The only man-made content is the pocketed-coil wrap, dust barrier and backing, which the brand puts at less than .01% of mattress weight, plus plant-based glue.
What do they cost?
LX is $475 to $900, LXC $790 to $1,390 and LXP $675 to $1,490. Bundles start at $547 and accessories at $89. Synchrony, Affirm and lease-to-own financing are offered.
