Cotton Cloud Mattress Review

Cotton Cloud, also listed as Cotton Cloud Natural Beds, is a Portland, Oregon futon and natural-bed shop. It sells hand-built 6 and 8 inch futon mattresses made from cotton, wool, recycled fiber and Dunlop latex. Queens run roughly $685 to $2,610 before shipping. It suits chemical-conscious futon shoppers who can buy locally. The catch is that shipped orders are final sale. Only a local 14-day mattress trial is offered.

Checked September 2026 against the brand's own pages and public listings. We haven't sleep-tested these mattresses, so treat this as a buyer's summary of what the brand publishes.

Which mattress suits your sleep needs?

Back sleepers should find Hawthorne, Pearl or Lily in medium-firm right for most. Stomach sleepers do best on Lily in firm or the firmer futon builds. Avoid the soft-topped Trillium. Side sleepers have two choices. Trillium has a soft 2-inch top and is the line's side-sleeper pick. Pearl has a wool top. Thin futons on firm bases may press on shoulders and hips.

Combination sleepers can use the foldable Wellspring or Woolspring builds. Heavier sleepers should look at latex models, which should hold shape better than all-fiber futons. Try them in store. Cotton, wool and latex breathe better than memory foam. The brand doesn't publish test data (checked September 2026). It doesn't publish motion or edge data for couples either.

For chemical sensitivity, you get cotton, wool and filler-free Dunlop latex with CertiPUR-US foam. The brand doesn't publish GOTS, GOLS or OEKO-TEX finished-product certificates.

Mattress prices and value

Queen prices in September 2026, local pickup then shipped, were Hawthorne $685 ($1,050), Woolspring $950 ($1,300), Wellspring Supreme $960 ($1,210) and Pearl $1,395 ($1,625). Lily 6-inch latex was $1,980 and Trillium 8-inch latex $2,610, both shipped free.

Twin entry points are $435 for Hawthorne, $675 for Woolspring, $775 for Wellspring, $865 for Pearl, $1,260 for Lily and $1,535 for Trillium. All except the latex models exclude size-based shipping. Hawthorne and Woolspring are the budget picks. Pearl charges for organic cotton plus wool. Covers, frames and shipping upgrades cost extra. The brand doesn't publish sales or financing (checked September 2026).

What are the mattresses made of?

Hawthorne layers cotton batting with CertiPUR-US polyurethane foam, a 2-inch core sheet plus 1-inch sheets above and below, in a heavy double-stitched tufted shell. Pearl uses 4 layers of certified organic cotton batting around the same foam, plus a wool top. The product page names no certifying body. Wellspring Supreme pairs a 2-inch foam core with two 2.5-inch convoluted foam pieces, wrapped in batting made from recycled drink bottles. Woolspring adds Eco-Valley wool batting.

Lily is two 3-inch Dunlop latex layers in a 3-sided-zip organic wool-quilted cover. The maker claims no fillers or synthetics. Trillium has two 3-inch medium-firm Dunlop cores and a soft 2-inch Dunlop top. The foam is CertiPUR-US certified per product pages.

All futons need a breathable slatted base, never a solid platform or the floor, because of mold risk. Flip and rotate them regularly. Futons start up to 3 inches under standard size and spread 1 to 3 inches over up to a year.

How well do the mattresses hold up?

The brand estimates Pearl at 5 to 10 years and Hawthorne at 4 to 8 years. The latex pages only note that most latex makers offer a 10 to 15 year warranty. That isn't a Cotton Cloud warranty. Tufting, flipping and rotating are the stated upkeep.

The brand doesn't publish its warranty length, sag threshold, foundation rules or claim process (checked September 2026). Independent durability tests aren't published either. Latex should outlast fiber futons on general logic, but that's our inference, not a brand claim.

Customer reviews and complaints

The brand doesn't publish aggregate star ratings or review counts on its site, Google, Yelp, BBB or mattress press (checked September 2026). The Yelp page wouldn't load, and Google gave no usable summary. We couldn't verify any praise or complaint themes.

You should visit the Portland store and lie on the exact build you want. Your bed may differ from the floor model. Handmade futons vary by cotton lot and start up to 3 inches under standard size.

Where can you try and buy?

You can buy direct at cottoncloudfutons.com, where all six mattress models were buyable in September 2026. You can also visit the Portland, Oregon store at 701 NE Broadway St, Portland, OR 97232, phone +1 503-335-0758. Confirm hours and appointment rules on the site.

The About page says the original Cotton Cloud Futons store started in 1981 under founder Terri Treat. In 2024, longtime manager Christopher Mack bought the name and opened the current store on the same principles. The brand doesn't publish third-party dealers or other showrooms.

Delivery, setup and removal

Most futons are made to order, with up to a 2 to 3 week lead time. Phone ahead for rush needs. Local pickup at the Portland store is free and usually ready in 5 or more days. Portland-area delivery goes through More Than Freights, arranged and paid separately.

Shipped futons go by FedEx or UPS with signature required, vacuum-packed, with tracking emailed. Shipping cost depends on size and covers the 48 contiguous states. Alaska, Hawaii and Canada are quoted extra by phone. Lily and Trillium ship free to the lower 48. The brand doesn't publish setup, delivery timeframes or old-mattress removal (checked September 2026).

Sleep trial and returns

All sales are final and non-returnable after one week of possession. Returns within 7 days of pickup must be unused, in original packaging, for store credit only.

Mattresses get a 14-day trial, with 100% store credit or up to 80% cash refund. You must use a mattress pad or protector. The mattress must come back in showroom quality, with no pet fur, stains, rips, torn seams or popped tufts, or it can be refused. The trial is for local shoppers only. All shipped orders are final sale. The brand doesn't publish exchange details or refund timing, so re-read the refund policy before you buy.

Warranty

The brand doesn't publish a warranty length, coverage, exclusions or claim process (checked September 2026). The only warranty language is a latex note that most makers offer 10 to 15 years. It isn't a Cotton Cloud promise.

Lifespan estimates, 4 to 8 years for Hawthorne and 5 to 10 for Pearl, are guidance, not coverage. Treat your purchase as having no published warranty. Confirm any coverage in writing before you buy.

Cotton Cloud vs. other brands

Avocado and Naturepedic sell certified-organic (GOTS) latex-and-coil mattresses with 1-year trials and 10 to 25 year warranties, at higher prices. Cotton Cloud wins on entry price and true futon feel. It loses on certifications, coils, trial length and written warranty.

Savvy Rest and PlushBeds offer component customization and published warranties. Cotton Cloud offers fixed slabs with free lower-48 shipping. Against mainstream innerspring and memory foam, it has no coils or slow-sink foam, sleeps firmer and flatter, and needs flipping. Cheap marketplace futons cost less, but Cotton Cloud wins on hand-built Portland construction and natural fills.
