The 30-second verdict

Best for side sleepers over 230 pounds, per Sleep Foundation's fit evidence; value shoppers have cheaper picks. The catch is the single Medium-Firm option: Sleep Foundation and Sleepopolis rated it Firm, while Mattress Clarity called it Medium-Firm. For value seekers, Nectar Classic Hybrid is a better fit, and Sleep Foundation lists them among its best fits. Nectar's Queen price is $849; the Bear Pro Hybrid's Queen list price is $1,855.00. Buy it only if its feel and support suit you better than the alternatives.

Pros
  • Edge support. Sleep Foundation reviewer Colin Simpson says the reinforced edge should make getting in and out easier for people without mobility limits.
  • Fiberglass-free design. Bear says this mattress meets federal mattress fire-safety standards without fiberglass fabric.
  • Base choices. Bear lists platform beds and adjustable bases as options, giving you alternatives to a traditional coil box spring.
  • Wrapped coil core. The support layer has an 8-inch coil core with individually wrapped springs and 13.5 gauge springs.
Cons
  • Stomach sleeper fit. Sleepopolis says most average-weight stomach sleepers' hips may sink too far, which can lead to back pain.
  • Slat spacing. Bear requires support slats less than 5.5 inches apart, so check your frame before buying.
  • Cooling upgrade. Bear offers the CoolForce™ Layer as an optional upgrade, so it is not included by default.
Feel & Fit

How firm is the Pro Hybrid, and which firmness should you pick?

Bear's listed choice is Medium-Firm, 6/10, so choose it if that is the feel you prefer.

Sleep Foundation rates it Firm (7) on its scale; Mattress Clarity gives it 7/10 on its firmness scale; Sleepopolis gives it 7/10 on its firmness scale. GoodBed rates it Firm (3) on its rating scale. Because each outlet uses its own scale, compare the labels rather than treating these numbers as one shared score. Those results support considering this bed if you prefer a firmer feel.

Is the Pro Hybrid right for your sleep position and body weight?

For people above 230 pounds, Sleep Foundation's scores show the Bear Pro Hybrid fits side sleeping better than stomach sleeping. Side sleeping is the clearest fit. Sleep Foundation rated it 9.0. It says the coil core helps keep hips from sinking below the upper body. That support matters for this group.

  • Sleep Foundation rated back sleeping 7.0. Its testers found the mattress very durable. That means early sagging should not be an issue for back sleepers above 230 pounds.
  • Sleep Foundation rated stomach sleeping 6.5. Its testers found it too plush above 230 pounds, so if you sleep on your stomach and weigh over 230 pounds, choose another feel.

Sleep Foundation's Colin Simpson says the edge support helps. People without mobility limits should be able to get in and out of bed without much trouble.

For this weight group, side sleeping is the strongest reason to choose it.

Is the Pro Hybrid good for back pain?

The Pro Hybrid may suit some people with back pain, but that is not a promise of pain relief. Bear says its coils help keep your spine aligned through the night. Sleep Foundation lists people with back pain as a best-fit group and calls it an excellent match for back sleepers 130 to 230 lbs. Sleepopolis says it could work for stomach sleepers weighing less than 150 pounds, but warns that most average-weight stomach sleepers' hips will sink too far, leading to back pain. Mattress Nerd warns heavyweight sleepers' hips may sink too far into the top layers, which can cause lower back pain. Check your sleep position and weight against these cautions before choosing it.

Feel & Fit

How cool or hot does it sleep?

It has cooling features, but the outside results do not show a clear cool or neutral feel. Bear says its quilted Celliant® infrared cover helps regulate temperature, and gel-infused memory foam disperses heat. An optional CoolForce™ Layer uses PCM to draw heat away and create a cool-to-the-touch surface. Bear says it can keep you up to 4 degrees cooler for 12 hours. NapLab measured a max surface temperature of 91.7° F. Sleep Advisor rated temperature regulation 3.5/5; Sleep Foundation rated temperature control 7.5/10. Count the features as a possible plus, not a promise of cool sleep.

Will you feel your partner move?

A light sleeper may feel a restless partner move. Outside results are mixed. NapLab rated motion transfer and bounce moderate. Sleep Foundation scores motion isolation at 7.0/10, which measures how well it keeps movement from reaching you. Sleepopolis rated motion isolation 4 of 5 on a scale of 1 to 5. Mattress Nerd rated it 2 of 5 and called the bed responsive and bouncy. If you wake easily, choose a bed with steadier motion-isolation results.

Where can you buy or try it?

For the Pro Hybrid, Bear names three shopping routes: bearmattress.com, partner showrooms across the U.S. found through its store locator, and The Mattress Shop (themattressshop.com). Showrooms may not stock every model, so call ahead to confirm the Pro Hybrid is on the floor before you drive there.

Build & Safety

How is the Pro Hybrid built, and what is it made of?

The Bear Pro Hybrid is built with fabric and foam over an individually wrapped coil core and a dense foam base. Bear lists the layers from top to bottom:

  • Quilted Celliant® Infrared Cover: Celliant fabric.
  • Quilt Foam with Cooling Layer: cushioning quilt foam; CoolForce™ Layer is available as an upgrade.
  • Gel Swirl Memory Foam: gel-infused memory foam.
  • Dynamic Transition Foam: conventional foam.
  • TitanCore Coils: an individually wrapped support core, 8 inches thick, with 13.5 gauge springs.
  • DuraDense Base Foam: high-density foundational foam.

Bear says its coil system has up to 1032 individually encased coils.

Bear says GREENGUARD Gold certification by UL covers the mattress for low emissions. CertiPUR-US® applies to the foam. Bear says the bed is assembled in the USA. The Queen weighs 70 lb, a practical factor when planning a move.

Does the Pro Hybrid have fiberglass?

Bear says the Pro Hybrid is fiberglass-free and uses no fiberglass fabric. It says the mattress meets federal mattress fire-safety standards under 16 CFR 1633 and 1632.

Build & Safety

What bed base does it need?

Bear says a firm, flat, sturdy platform or foundation works. A metal bed frame needs a supportive foundation or base on top, with slats at least 2 inches wide. Any slatted base or platform needs slats less than 5.5 inches apart; Bear says wider gaps void the warranty. An adjustable base must match, support the mattress and sleepers, and be used with a proper bed frame. Bear does not recommend a traditional coil box spring. The floor is an exception: keep airflow and use a level, evenly supportive surface; Bear recommends a foundation or bed frame instead.

Sag or indentation from an improper or unsupportive adjustable base is not covered. Check the base and slat gaps before setup.

How long will it last, and does it need flipping or rotating?

Mattress Nerd estimates this mattress should last about seven to ten years. Bear says keep it top-side up; turning it end-for-end is optional. That is a reviewer's estimate, not a promise for your bed. Durability scores differ across reviewers. Mattress Clarity gives it a durability score of 4. Sleep Foundation rates durability 8.0 out of 10 in its test lab ratings. Mattress Nerd scores it 4 of 5.

Bear says its break-in period is 30 nights, giving you time to adjust before judging the feel.

Delivery, setup and old mattress removal

Bear says it ships free by FedEx in a compressed, rolled box to the US lower 48 states. Bear says most orders ship within 5 to 8 business days. FedEx transit time varies by destination, so plan for both steps.

Bear says setup costs $194 base fee, plus $25 per mattress. Bear says In-Home Setup & Removal by Ryder includes old mattress removal and is offered at checkout where available. Removal can also be added after delivery through a partner.

Trials, returns and fees

Bear says its trial lasts 365 nights; returns are free after 30 nights, with no restocking or process and handling fees.

Bear allows one mattress exchange within 365 nights of delivery for a new model or different feel. Only one return or exchange is allowed per customer, household and address. The exchanged mattress is not eligible for a return, refund or trial period. Bear says a full refund of the cost of the mattress, less any discounts goes to the original form of payment after the mattress is removed and confirmed by Brooklyn Bedding LLC. If you send back an unopened mattress, its free gifts must go back too, or their cost comes off your refund. Closeout, Clearance, Final Sale, Factory Clearance and older dated model mattresses cannot be returned, exchanged or refunded.

What does the warranty cover, and what voids it?

Bear covers visible indentations over 1.5 inches; cover removal or base slat spacing over 5.5 inches voids coverage. Stains and liquid damage are not covered. For mattresses purchased starting 02/01/2025, Bear offers a limited lifetime warranty. Keep proof of purchase to claim. Bear ships a replacement at no cost in years 1 to 10. After year 10, you pay the prorated replacement charge: 50 percent in years 11 to 15, 60 percent in years 16 to 20, and 75 percent of the then current retail price in year 21 and later.

Owners & Sources

What do owners like and complain about?

Owner reports are mixed: some praise responsive support, while others flag a firmer feel, heat, off-gassing sensitivity, or partner disturbance. If any of those concerns could disrupt your sleep, weigh them before buying.

Mattress Nerd says a few customers reported it as too firm. If you prefer a softer bed, take this as a reason to pause. Consider how much softness matters to you before buying. Owner comments are clues, not a promise about how you will sleep, so let your comfort needs guide the choice.

How does the Pro Hybrid compare?

Bear’s siblings offer different trade-offs, with Original for value and everyday support and Original Hybrid for hybrid comfort and support at a value price. Bear points shoppers to Elite Hybrid for a choice of soft, medium, or firm, and Elite Ultra Hybrid for hot sleepers or maximum responsiveness. Pro Foam is the pick for an all-foam feel or extra pressure relief. Choose Bear Natural if you prefer natural latex and organic cotton.

For a rival with bounce, consider Saatva Classic: Sleep Foundation says its small coils provide support and bounce, and gives it a 9.5 overall test lab score. Choose it when bounce matters.
