The 30-second verdict

Yes for most back and side sleepers, Bear says. The catch is deeper edge sink: Sleep Foundation found more sinkage around the perimeter, which can make getting in and out harder. Side sleepers under 130 lb found it too firm, while those over 230 lb said it was good, not great.

Nectar Classic may fit better if a stronger Sleep Foundation score matters most: it scored 8.7/10 versus 7.8/10 for Bear Original. Nectar Classic's Queen price is $699.00; Bear Original's Queen list price is $998.00. Buy it only if your sleep position and weight fit those limits.

Pros
  • Long trial window. Bear offers a trial of 365 nights, with a minimum of 30 nights before a return.
  • Foam certifications. Bear says the mattress is GREENGUARD Gold certified, and its foam is CertiPUR-US certified.
  • Fire-safety claim. Bear says the mattress meets federal mattress fire safety standards without fiberglass fabric.
  • Buyer comfort praise. A verified buyer praised its body-adapting feel and joint pain relief.
Cons
  • Cooling results. NapLab called cooling mediocre, while Mattress Clarity rated it 4/5 and called it slightly above average.
  • Partner movement. NapLab found high motion transfer, so movement from a bed partner may carry across the mattress.
  • Shoulder firmness. Sleep Junkie testers found the surface too firm at the shoulder during extended side sleeping.
  • Frame limits. Bear says a box spring is not compatible, and platform slats should be less than 5.5 inches apart.
Feel & Fit

How firm is the Bear Original, and which firmness should you pick?

The Bear Original has one listed firmness: medium-firm, rated 6.5-7/10 by Bear. Choose it if you want a firm-leaning feel, but side sleepers under 130 lb may find it too firm. Sleep Foundation rated it Firm (7), Mattress Clarity gave it 7/10, and Sleepopolis scored it 7 out of 10. GoodBed rated it Firm (3) on the GoodBed rating scale. Each tester uses its own scale, so these scores are not one shared ruler. Check your weight and sleep position against that fit warning before choosing.

Feel & Fit

Is the Bear Original right for your sleep position and body weight?

The Bear Original is a mixed fit, with ratings that shift by sleep position and weight.

  • Side: Sleep Foundation rated it 6.5 (Good) under 130 lb, 7.5 (Good) at 130-230 lb, and 8.5/10 over 230 lb. Sleepers under 130 lb liked the foam but found the bed too firm. Those at 130-230 lb called it excellent. Those over 230 lb said it was good but not great, and found the foam too thin at their hips and shoulders.
  • Back: Ratings were 6.5 (Good) under 130 lb, 7.0 (Good) at 130-230 lb, and 6.5/10 over 230 lb. Some sleepers over 230 lb may sink too far and feel less supported.
  • Stomach: Ratings were 7.0 (Good) under 130 lb and at 130-230 lb, then 6.0/10 over 230 lb. Sleepers over 130 lb may find their midsection sinks too deeply, making comfort and spinal alignment harder.

Sleep Foundation rated edge support 6.5/10, with above-average support but deeper sinkage around the perimeter. Testers did not feel close to rolling off, but expect more give near the edge.

Feel & Fit

Is the Bear Original good for back pain?

The Bear Original's medium-firm feel is worth considering for back support, but it does not promise pain relief. Bear describes the feel as 6.5-7/10 and ideal for most back and side sleepers. Mattress Clarity's consulted physical therapist says people with back pain can appreciate firmer support and limited sinkage. Bear's statement covers back and side sleepers broadly; the therapist speaks to back pain specifically. If you want a firmer feel, use both points to judge whether this mattress fits your support needs.

Feel & Fit

How cool or hot does it sleep?

Outside testers disagree on cooling: results run from mediocre to among the best they tested. Bear lists a quilted Celliant® Infrared Cover and Gel Swirl Memory Foam. Bear says the gel draws heat away and disperses it. Sleepopolis gave cooling 4.5 stars and recorded 71.9 degrees after 5 minutes. National Council on Aging found about 3 degrees of temperature rise, the smallest among mattresses it tested. Mattress Clarity called the cooling slightly above average and reported a surface reading of 73.1 degrees. NapLab reported a maximum of 92.5° F and called cooling mediocre. If you sleep hot, these mixed results mean the Bear is not a sure cooling pick.

Feel & Fit

Will you feel your partner move?

You may feel your partner move on the Bear Original; outside testers disagree on motion transfer. NapLab measured high motion transfer at 12.42 m/s² total acceleration range and moderate bounce at 8.44 inches total bounce height. Mattress Clarity scored motion isolation 4.3/5 and rated its 11 inches of bounce low.

Sleepopolis gave motion isolation 4.7 stars and rated bounce at 9.5 inches as low, with 3 stars. NCOA gave motion isolation 4 out of 5. If you are a light sleeper with a restless partner, do not count on movement staying unnoticed. These readings range from high transfer to stronger isolation scores, so they do not guarantee quiet sleep.

You can order the Original on bearmattress.com, Bear's own site. To see it in person, use Bear's store locator to find a partner showroom. Build & Safety

How is the Bear Original built, and what is it made of?

Bear lists the Bear Original as a quilted cover over foam layers. Its build runs from the cover to a foam base:

  • Quilted Celliant® Infrared Cover: fabric infused with fibers that convert excess body heat into infrared energy.
  • Gel Swirl Memory Foam: memory foam infused with gel for a cooling effect, as Bear describes it.
  • Responsive Comfort Foam: firmer foam with slight bounce; Bear says it lifts and reinforces the layers above.
  • High-Density Foundation Foam: resilient, high-density base foam, 6 in thick.

Bear says the mattress is made in the USA with foreign and domestic components. The listed Queen weight is 70 lb (Queen), so check your delivery route and plan for lifting help.

Bear lists GREENGUARD Gold for the mattress and CertiPUR-US® for the foam.

Build & Safety

Does the Bear Original have fiberglass?

Bear says the Original is fiberglass-free and meets federal mattress fire safety standards, 16 CFR 1633 and 1632, without fiberglass fabric. If you want to avoid fiberglass, this is the claim to weigh. Check the law tag before you buy, then decide whether Bear's statement is enough for you to choose this bed.

Build & Safety

What bed base does it need?

Use a firm, flat, sturdy platform or foundation with slats less than 5.5 inches apart; Bear says wider gaps void the warranty. Bear also recommends an adjustable base, which must match and support the mattress and sleepers, with a proper bed frame. A box spring is not compatible. Bear does not cover sag or indentation caused by an improper or unsupportive adjustable base.

Build & Safety

How long will it last, and does it need flipping or rotating?

Sleep Foundation says sleepers should expect around six or seven years from the Bear Original. Treat that as a planning estimate, not a promise. Bear says it is one-sided: do not flip it, and rotate it head to foot. Most owners rotate it every 3 to 6 months. Bear also gives it a 30-night break-in period, so allow that time before deciding whether its feel works for you.

Delivery, setup and old mattress removal

Bear sends the Original to the US lower 48 states at no shipping charge, packed compressed and rolled for FedEx. Most orders ship within 5 to 8 business days; transit time depends on your destination, so this is not an arrival date. Bear says its In-Home Setup & Removal by Ryder, selected at checkout, takes away your old mattress for a $194 base fee plus $25 per mattress. You can also add removal after delivery through a partner.

Closeout, Clearance, Final Sale, Factory Clearance and older dated model mattresses cannot be returned, exchanged or refunded. Opened adjustable bases cannot be returned.

What does the warranty cover, and what voids it?

For mattresses purchased starting 02/01/2025, Bear says its limited lifetime warranty covers visible indentations greater than 1.5 inches.

To claim, keep proof of purchase. Bear says removing the cover or using an improper base with slats more than 5.5 inches apart voids coverage; stains and liquid damage are not covered. Bear ships the replacement at no cost in years 1 to 10. After year 10, you pay a share of the replacement charge: 50 percent in years 11 to 15, 60 percent in years 16 to 20, and 75 percent of the then current retail price in year 21 and later.

Owners & Sources

What do owners like and complain about?

Feedback is mixed: a verified buyer praises the Original's body-adapting feel without sinking and joint pain relief (bearmattress.com), while testers flag edge and shoulder concerns. Mattress Clarity testers report great pressure relief for side sleepers under 230 lb, which may appeal if you sleep on your side. Sleep Foundation testers warn that the edges can sag, a concern if getting in or out of bed is already difficult. Sleep Junkie testers found the surface too firm at the shoulder during extended side sleeping. Side sleepers should weigh the pressure relief against the shoulder concern; anyone who relies on steady edges should take the sag warning seriously.

How does the Bear Original compare?

The Bear Original's closest comparisons are Bear's siblings, plus Loom & Leaf and Nectar as outside options. Bear's Original Hybrid adds individually wrapped springs; choose it for a springier feel and more air movement, with deeper support than the all-foam Original.

Bear lists Elite Hybrid for hot sleepers seeking advanced cooling, while Elite Ultra Hybrid is for people wanting more responsiveness without sleep disturbances.

Bear says Pro Foam is for shoppers seeking enhanced pressure relief for achy muscles and joints. Bear lists Pro Hybrid for combination sleepers who toss and turn. Bear describes Natural as a latex mattress with organic cotton, a fit if you prefer those materials.

Pick Loom & Leaf by Saatva if you want memory foam with a body-hugging feel.

Sleep Foundation presents Nectar Classic as a budget all-foam option. Its Queen price is $699.00. Sleep Foundation scores it 8.7/10 compared with Bear Original's 7.8/10. Choose Nectar if that higher rating matters more to you than staying with Bear.
