The 30-second verdict
Yes, especially for side sleepers. Sleep Foundation found side sleepers enjoyed pressure relief and coil support across body weights. The catch is sleeper fit. Sleep Foundation found mixed results for back and stomach sleepers weighing 130 pounds or more. That makes your sleeping position important before ordering. Buy it only if you sleep on your side or are comfortable with that fit risk.

Original Hybrid
Pros
Side sleeper score. Sleep Foundation rated side sleepers above 230 lbs 8.5/10, a positive fit signal for that group.
Edge support score. Sleep Foundation rated its edge support 7.5/10, a result to weigh if you use the bed's sides.
Fiberglass-free claim. Bear says the mattress is fiberglass-free.
Foam certifications. Bear lists CertiPUR-US® for the foam and GREENGUARD Gold for the mattress, so each certification has a clear scope.
Optional cooling layer. Bear says its optional CoolForce™ Layer with PCM is intended to make the sleep surface cooler.
Cons
Single firmness choice. NapLab lists Medium-Firm as the only firmness option, so there is no softer or firmer feel to choose.
Box spring mismatch. Bear lists box springs as incompatible, so use a different support base.
Queen moving weight. Bear lists the Queen at 115 lb, so plan for help if you need to move it.
Moderate motion transfer. NapLab reports moderate motion transfer, with a 7.7 score and 10.15 m/s² acceleration, so light sleepers sharing a bed may want to consider it.
How firm is the Original Hybrid, and which firmness should you pick?
Choose the Bear Original Hybrid if you want a medium-firm feel: Bear rates its Medium-Firm option 6/10. Sleep Foundation lists it as Medium Firm (6), updated September 11, 2026. NapLab rates it 6 out of 10 (10 is firmest), updated 2026-10-09. NapLab says the mattress has a single firmness level, so you cannot choose a softer or firmer version of it. If that feel matches your preference, pick the bed; if you want a softer or firmer feel, choose a different mattress.
Is the Original Hybrid right for your sleep position and body weight?
For sleepers above 230 lbs, the Bear Original Hybrid looks like a better fit for side sleeping than back or stomach sleeping. Sleep Foundation rated it 8.5/10 for side sleepers, 6/10 for back sleepers, and 5.5/10 for stomach sleepers. Sleep Foundation says side sleepers across body weights enjoyed its mix of pressure relief and coil support. Side sleeping has the clearest fit signal in these results.
For back and stomach sleepers at 130 pounds or more, Sleep Foundation reports mixed experiences, so fit may vary. Sleep Foundation rated edge support 7.5/10. That score may matter if you sit or sleep near the edge. Back and stomach sleepers should weigh that uncertainty before choosing this bed.
The Bear Original Hybrid is worth considering for back pain, but it cannot promise pain relief. Bear says its 6-inch coil system helps keep the spine lifted and aligned. That describes the brand’s support claim, not a promise that the bed will ease your pain.
Sleep Foundation also calls it a solid choice for sleepers with chronic or frequent back pain. This outside assessment gives back-pain shoppers a reason to consider the bed, not a guarantee that their pain will improve.
NapLab’s readings suggest some heat build-up, not neutral sleep. Bear says the quilted Celliant® infrared cover and gel swirl memory foam help with cooling. Individually wrapped springs and coils allow airflow. The optional CoolForce™ Layer adds PCM, which Bear says draws heat away from your body.
NapLab recorded a baseline of 79.9° F, a maximum of 91.0° F, and an ending temperature of 82.6° F. The bed cooled from its peak, but the ending reading stayed above baseline. Expect some warmth during sleep.
A light sleeper may feel a restless partner move on the Bear Original Hybrid. NapLab gave motion transfer a score of 7.7 and measured acceleration at 10.15 m/s². It called motion transfer moderate, so some movement may reach you. NapLab measured bounce at 8.12″ and called that moderate. If movement wakes you, treat these readings as a reason for caution with this bed.
The Bear Original Hybrid may be worth considering if its Queen list price of $1,284 fits your budget.

How is the Original Hybrid built, and what is it made of?
The Bear Original Hybrid is built from a quilted cover, foam layers, wrapped coils and a foam base. From top to bottom, the layers are:
Quilted Celliant® Infrared Cover: fabric infused with infrared-converting fibers.
Quilt foam for cushioning, with an optional CoolForce™ cooling layer.
Gel Swirl Memory Foam, made with gel-infused memory foam.
Dynamic Transition Foam, conventional foam that joins the comfort system and support core.
Ascension coils, individually wrapped with reinforced edges, in a support core that is 6 inches thick.
DuraDense Base Foam, high-density foundational foam beneath the coils.
Bear says the Queen weighs 115 lb and the mattress is assembled in the USA. Bear lists CertiPUR-US® for foam in the mattress and GREENGUARD Gold for the mattress, so the certifications cover different scopes.
Bear says the Original Hybrid is fiberglass-free. Bear's help site says its fire-resistant materials are made from a blend of non-woven hydrated silica, rayon, polyester, and cotton. Check the law tag on the mattress you are considering before you buy.
Use a supportive foundation or platform with slats less than 5.5 inches apart; Bear also recommends an adjustable base. A box spring is not compatible. For an adjustable base, choose a matching model that supports the mattress and sleepers, with a proper bed frame. Bear’s warranty does not cover sag or indentation caused by an improper or unsupportive adjustable base.
How long will it last, and does it need flipping or rotating?
Bear says not to flip this bed and that most customers rotate it head to foot every 3-6 months. Sleep Foundation gives the Bear Original Hybrid a durability rating of 7.5/10.
Bear says to allow 30 nights for break-in. Set a repeating calendar reminder for Bear's rotation interval, so you do not have to keep track of it from memory.
Bear says this bed ships free in a rolled box through FedEx to the US lower 48 states. Most orders ship within 5 to 8 business days. FedEx travel time varies by destination, so leave room in your plans. Setup costs $194, plus $25 per mattress.
Bear says old mattress removal is included with In-Home Setup & Removal by Ryder, when offered at checkout. Check there before you count on removal. You can also add it after delivery through a partner.

Bear says its trial lasts 365 nights, with returns allowed after 30 nights. Bear lists the return fee as Free, with no restocking or process and handling fees. After the mattress is removed and confirmed by Brooklyn Bedding LLC, Bear says it refunds the full cost of the mattress, less any discounts, to the original form of payment. Bear allows one exchange within 365 nights of delivery; the exchanged mattress cannot be returned, refunded or given a trial period. Bear excludes Closeout, Clearance, Final Sale, Factory Clearance and older dated model mattresses from returns, exchanges and refunds.

Bear says the limited lifetime warranty for mattresses purchased starting 02/01/2025 covers visible indentations greater than 1.5 inches.
Removing the cover or using an improper base with slats more than 5.5 inches apart voids coverage. Stains and liquid damage are not covered. Keep proof of purchase. Bear ships replacements at no cost in years 1 to 10. After year 10, you pay a prorated replacement charge. That charge is 50 percent in years 11 to 15 and 60 percent in years 16 to 20. For year 21 and later, you pay 75 percent of the then current retail price.
The Bear Original Hybrid differs from Bear's all-foam Original, which the brand recommends to value seekers. Bear recommends Pro Foam for couples who prefer an all-foam feel and Pro Hybrid for couples or combination sleepers who toss and turn. Bear's Natural is a latex hybrid with organic cotton and natural latex. Bear recommends Elite Hybrid to hot sleepers wanting advanced cooling and Elite Ultra to hot sleepers seeking maximum responsiveness without sleep disturbances.
Saatva Classic is a hot-sleeper rival; Sleep Foundation gives it a 9.5 overall test-lab score. For a budget-friendly hybrid, consider DreamCloud Classic Hybrid, which Sleep Foundation gives an 8.5 overall test-lab score.
