Back Science Mattress Review

Back Science is a chiropractor-founded, factory-direct brand from Agoura Hills, California. It's a division of Relief-Mart Corp. You can pick from four made-to-order beds for back pain: Essentials, Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3. Prices run from $749 to $5,399 during the 25-year anniversary sale. You get a 365-night trial, free comfort changes and a 20 to 30 year limited warranty. It suits back-pain shoppers who want zoned lumbar support. The catches are premium prices, hybrids that ship uncompressed by freight, and very little independent complaint data.

Checked September 2026 against the brand's own pages and public listings. We haven't sleep-tested these mattresses, so treat this as a buyer's summary of what the brand publishes.

Which mattress suits your sleep needs?

The brand says Essentials is luxury firm for all positions. Series 1 is firm for back and stomach sleepers. Series 2 is luxury firm for mixed sleepers. Series 3 is medium or medium plush for side sleepers. The brand also warns that firmer isn't always better for back pain.

Sleep Foundation tested the Series 2. Side sleeping scored 7/10 under 130 lb, 8/10 at 130 to 230 lb and 9/10 over 230 lb. Back sleeping scored 7, 7.5 and 7. Stomach sleeping scored 7.5, 7.5 and 6.5. Couples can order split firmness or get a free replacement layer during the trial. The brand doesn't publish weight limits (checked September 2026). You can take a sleep quiz or call 800-667-1969.

Mattress prices and value

Curbside delivery is free. Reviews often quote older list prices, such as $3,332 for the Series 2 queen. That's not what you'll pay now.

Cal King and the split and split-top Cal King sizes match their King prices. All four beds come in 10 sizes.

The same catalog sells True Platform foundations from $329. BackFlex 1, 2 and 3 adjustable bases start at $1,049, $1,499 and $2,019. It also sells pillows, protectors, sheets, supplements and massage chairs from $2,499 to $14,999.

The Essentials is competitive with mid-range foam beds. The hybrids sit in premium territory, above Saatva Classic ($1,449 to $2,518), WinkBed ($999 to $1,999) and Helix Midnight ($749 to $1,358). Financing includes Synchrony plans of 12, 24 or 48 months, Shop Pay installments and Flex HSA/FSA payment. Bases add $329 to $2,919. White glove costs $199 outside Southern California. Cancelling after freight ships costs $199.

What are the mattresses made of?

Every model uses fiber-free polyurethane foam. The hybrids add pocketed coils. There's no memory foam and no latex. The Kool-Flow bamboo viscose cover has a GripLock zipper, so you can open it and swap layers. Comfort layers are PostureFlex hypergel, a gel-infused foam the brand calls buoyant rather than sinking.

Hybrids use a 6 in DuraFlex unit of individually wrapped 15-gauge US steel coils. King sizes have 1,000-plus coils and Quantum Edge perimeter reinforcement. The ResiliFlex edge cradle is 3 in tall and 4 in wide. Cooling comes from the Airflow Transfer System (US Patent No. 7,334,280), which the brand claims is up to 100 times more breathable. The beds are Greenguard Gold and CertiPUR-US certified, and made in the USA.

The brand doesn't publish foam densities (checked September 2026). Mattress Underground lists the hypergel at 3 lb and the HD foams at 1.8 lb per cubic foot. You won't find GOTS, GOLS or OEKO-TEX certifications.

How well do the mattresses hold up?

Series 1, 2 and 3 carry a 30-year limited warranty. Essentials carries 20 years. The brand calls it double strength because it triggers at 0.75 in of sag, not the usual 1.5 in. It says rotating the bed every other month for four months, then every six months, helps it last.

We found no independent long-term durability testing. Sleep Foundation scored the Series 2 durability at 8/10 based on materials and build. The brand says it has over 130,000 customers and about 91 percent satisfaction. None of that is verified. GoodBed lists the brand as founded in 2024, but the brand dates its start to 1999.

Customer reviews and complaints

Sleep Foundation rated the Series 2 at 8.5/10. Its scores were motion isolation 8, edge support 8.5, temperature control 7.5, ease of movement 6.5, durability 8, pressure relief 7 and off-gassing 7.5. Cons were a higher price, thick foam that slows movement, and firmness mismatches at weight extremes. Sleep Examiner scored it 9.7/10 and ranked it number one for back pain for 2026.

The brand's site quotes three 5-star Trustpilot reviews (Jan 23, Feb 16 and Nov 19) and short testimonials from doctors and chiropractors. It cites a 2024 Trustpilot owner survey. It claims 97 percent had less back pain, 98 percent had good support and 96 percent slept cooler. The raw data isn't published. Several outside review sites could not be read in September 2026, so we can't state a verified complaint pattern. SiteJabber shows 0 reviews and a 0.0 rating. The mild issues we did see were short-lived new-foam smell and extra effort moving on the thick foam.

Where can you try and buy?

You buy direct at backscience.com or by phone at 800-667-1969 (local 805-379-4300). Beds are hand-built in a 10,000 sq ft factory. Prices and terms here were checked on September 22, 2026. You can try beds at the Ultrabed showroom at 28505 Canwood Street, Agoura Hills, CA 91301. It carries 30-plus other mattress brands. Hours differ between the brand's pages, so call first.

The brand mentions a local distributor network but doesn't publish a dealer list. There aren't any Amazon, Walmart, Wayfair or Costco listings.

Delivery, setup and removal

Most beds are made to order. Expect 2 to 3 weeks to build, then 1 to 5 business days in transit. Curbside delivery is free in the contiguous US. Alaska, Hawaii and other regions ship only in limited capacity, with pricing by phone.

Hybrids and foundations ship full size by freight and are never compressed. Only the Essentials ships rolled. White glove setup is $199, and it's free for most Southern California deliveries. Someone must accept delivery, or storage fees of up to $25 per day apply. The brand does not publish an old-mattress removal service (checked September 2026).

Sleep trial and returns

You get 365 nights with no restocking fees. Free layer changes and free exchanges run the full 365 nights. Exchanges include any Back Science model or any of the 30-plus brands at the showroom. A full refund is available only in the first 120 nights, minus a $199 return shipping fee. That fee is waived within 40 miles of the showroom.

You need an RMA before any return. Expect a 14-day inspection before credit. Bases and foundations aren't returnable. Bedding and pillows are exchange-only within 30 nights. Massage chairs have a 30-day return with a $250 or $500 flat shipping charge.

Warranty

Series 1 to 3 carry 30 years limited and Essentials carries 20 years, to the original owner only. The first 10 years cover defective parts, labor and materials. You pay shipping. From year 11 you pay a prorated share. Coverage starts at sagging deeper than 0.75 in, measured with a string across the bed.

Damage from food, drink, urine, punctures, pets and burns isn't covered. Neither is a bad foundation or liquid inside the bed. Split-Top and custom-firmness beds are exempt from the rotation rule. The Essentials page keeps the 30-year proration formula despite its 20-year term. Claims go to support@backscience.com or 800-667-1969.

Back Science vs. other brands

Against Casper, Helix, WinkBed, Tuft and Needle and Nectar, Back Science offers more coils and a stronger edge. It loses on convenience and price. Saatva Classic is $1,449 to $2,518 with a 15-year warranty, but Saatva has far more reviews and a national delivery network.

Against Tempur-Pedic, Back Science uses no memory foam. Memory-foam fans may still prefer Tempur-Pedic. Sleep Number gives air-chamber control. Against Avocado, Sleep on Latex and Naturepedic, Back Science offers zoned lumbar support but no organic certifications.

We last checked everything here in September 2026. Prices and policies change, so confirm them on the seller's page before you buy. You can read more in our methodology and editorial policy.
