Safety 1st Mattress Review

Safety 1st is a Dorel Juvenile brand that joined the Dorel Group in 2000. It built a budget crib mattress line, Heavenly Dreams and Peaceful Lullabies, then left the category. As of September 2026 the official site sells no mattresses. Amazon shows Heavenly Dreams as unavailable, and Walmart shows Peaceful Lullabies as out of stock. If you find one, you'll get a firm 5 in fiber core at a low price. It isn't a mattress you can try first. Cover cracking and middle sagging are the most common complaints.

Checked September 2026 against the brand's own pages and public listings. We haven't sleep-tested these mattresses, so treat this as a buyer's summary of what the brand publishes.

Which mattress suits your sleep needs?

These are crib and toddler mattresses only. Every model is a firm, flat 5 in surface. For newborns, look at the Standard Firm, the Deluxe Dual in infant mode, Peaceful Lullabies, or the Canada Grow with Me and Little Angel. For toddlers, the Deluxe Dual 2-in-1 (US) or Grow with Me 2-in-1 (Canada) flips to a cushioned side.

For messy nights, You'll find removable machine-washable covers on Peaceful Lullabies and Heavenly Dreams Supreme Firm. The vinyl Heavenly Dreams wipes clean if you'd rather not do laundry. Every model is GREENGUARD certified with no flame-retardant chemicals. At 7.5 lb, the Heavenly Dreams Standard is easiest to flip and carry.

Every model has a 50 lb weight limit and a standard 52 x 27.5 in size. None is a mini, oval, or bassinet size. There's no organic, GOTS, GOLS, latex, innerspring, or hybrid model.

Mattress prices and value

Heavenly Dreams Standard Firm cost $49.00 on Amazon. Peaceful Lullabies cost $53.25 at Walmart on clearance, down from $69.00 (a $15.75 saving). The Canada-only 2019 lineup ran Heavenly Dreams at CAD $89.99, Grow with Me 2-in-1 at CAD $99.99, and Little Angel Bamboo at CAD $129.99.

As of September 2026, neither live listing shows a price you can buy at. Any purchase you make now depends on leftover stock, third-party resellers, or the used market.

For scale, Target's in-stock crib mattresses cost this much. Dream On Me Twinkle 5 in is $39.99 and Kolcraft Sleepy Little One is $41.99. Sealy Ortho Rest is $59.99 and Sealy Cozy Rest 2-Stage is $62.99. Delta Children Aire Standard 5 in is $79.99, Graco Deluxe Foam is $99.99, and Graco Essentials 6 in is $109.99. Newton Essential is $199.99 and Newton Essentials Waterproof is $249.99. Safety 1st undercut Graco, Delta, Sealy, and Newton by roughly 30 to 80 percent. But those rivals are in stock, and Safety 1st isn't.

What are the mattresses made of?

Every model is a fiber-core mattress. There are no coils, springs, or foam layers. The Heavenly Dreams Standard Firm and Deluxe Dual use a high-density thermo-bonded polyester core. The Heavenly Dreams Supreme Firm and Peaceful Lullabies use a fiber blend of cotton, wool, and polyester.

Covers vary. The US Standard Firm and Canada Heavenly Dreams use 100% vinyl laminated with polypropylene. The brand calls it hypoallergenic, tear resistant, and resistant to stains, odors, and mildew. The Deluxe Dual uses vinyl with polyethylene, and Canada's Grow with Me uses PVC-free PEVA. The Supreme Firm and Peaceful Lullabies use polyester with rayon from bamboo, and the Peaceful Lullabies cover is machine washable.

All models are described as free of phthalates and lead and made without flame-retardant chemicals. They meet federal flammability standard 16 CFR 1633. Certification wording varies between GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD Gold depending on the listing. All are 5 in thick, 52 to 52.5 in long, and 27.5 in wide. Walmart's spec table for Peaceful Lullabies also lists a conflicting 30 lb max load. The brand doesn't publish foam densities, IFDs, layer thicknesses, or fiber core weights (checked September 2026).

How well do the mattresses hold up?

Durability is this brand's weak spot. Amazon's review summary says some customers find it holds up well, while others say it rips easily. Of eight measured aspects, durability is the only one that skews negative. 565 reviewers mention it, 233 positive and 332 negative.

The main complaint is the vinyl cover. Owners report cracks after less than 8 months, splits along seams by 10 to 11 months, and plastic flaking off. One parent worried about swallowed fragments. Others report sagging in the middle. One Walmart reviewer said it sagged and no longer suited an 8-month-old. As the cover softens, some owners also see a gap at one end of the crib. That matters because you need a snug crib fit for safety.

Some owners are happy. You'll see one who used the same mattress every night for almost 3 years and it was still going strong at age 2.5. Another called it an incredible value, so you'll see mixed reports. No independent lab durability testing exists for any Safety 1st mattress. Peaceful Lullabies has only 50 Walmart ratings, which is too few to judge. The 10-year and 15-year warranties exclude normal wear and tear, which is how cover cracking and sagging would likely be treated.

Customer reviews and complaints

On Amazon, Heavenly Dreams (B004044LD4) has 4.6 out of 5 stars from 9,315 ratings. It ranks #242 in Crib Mattresses and #55,116 in Baby. Value for money has 1,066 mentions (879 positive, 187 negative). Firmness has 886 (681 positive, 205 negative). Fit has 839 (782 positive, 57 negative). Water resistance has 197 (183 positive, 14 negative).

At Walmart, Peaceful Lullabies (item 19511840) has 4.5 out of 5 stars from 50 ratings as of September 2026. A May 2025 snapshot showed 4.4 from 48 ratings. Praise includes "not too firm or soft, fits the crib nice," great value, and a surface that wipes clean. Complaints include cracked covers, flaking plastic, sagging, a poor crib fit, and "thin, flimsy" feel.

We found no Better Business Bureau or Trustpilot profile for Safety 1st mattresses. We found no Safety 1st mattress recall. The brand's recalls we found cover strollers, stair gates, play yards, bath seats, car seats, latches, a monitor battery, and a bed rail.

Where can you try and buy?

Online only, and barely. You won't find a store. There's no showroom or in-store trial. Target's crib mattress range (903 results, checked September 2026) has no Safety 1st mattresses. The brand's retailer page lists no stores.

Two live listings exist. Amazon shows Heavenly Dreams as currently unavailable with 9,315 ratings. Walmart shows Peaceful Lullabies (item 19511840) as clearance and now out of stock, sold and shipped by Walmart.com. Older listings include Walmart items 14968109 and 23632037, and Stars a Plenty items 46927996 and 46928002. Past sellers include Sam's Club, Sears, Kmart, The Bay, Newegg, and Brookstone. One reseller listed it at $80.04 plus $40.84 shipping.

In Canada, the brand's store carried Heavenly Dreams, Grow with Me 2-in-1, and Little Angel Bamboo pages in 2019. All are now delisted. You can't try one anywhere, and you largely can't buy one new.

Delivery, setup and removal

Safety 1st no longer sells mattresses, so it has no mattress delivery or removal service. Its published shipping terms are free US shipping on orders of $50 and over, and a $7.99 flat fee under $50. It ships by UPS Ground or FedEx. It doesn't deliver to PO boxes, APO addresses, or US territories. There's no white-glove setup. Warehouses close on New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

At Walmart, the Peaceful Lullabies listing offered free shipping, free 90-day returns, and Mattress Haul Away at $0.00. On Amazon, standard delivery applied with no in-home setup.

A 5 in crib mattress at 7.5 lb to 11.5 lb arrives compressed in a box. You drop it into the crib. You don't need a foundation or box spring, and it doesn't list a recycling fee.

Sleep trial and returns

There's no sleep trial. Safety 1st crib mattresses were never sold with one. Direct from safety1st.com, returns were allowed within 30 days of receipt. The item had to be in the same condition as received, in its original packaging, with proof of purchase. A pre-paid label was supplied, but original shipping charges are non-refundable. You'd have to start a return first through Consumer Care, by site chat or at 1-888-521-6550. Hours are Monday to Thursday 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM ET and Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM ET.

If you bought at retail, you follow the retailer's policy. Walmart offered free 90-day returns. Amazon applied its standard window. No exchange program, restocking fee, or recycling fee is published. Since the products are out of stock, a return may end in a refund rather than a replacement.

Warranty

Two mattress warranties exist, and neither appears on the official warranty page. Heavenly Dreams has a 10-year limited warranty, per Amazon details and brand copy. Peaceful Lullabies has a 15-year limited warranty, per Walmart's item features. The official warranty page, written by Dorel Juvenile Group, lists no mattresses. It covers products at 90 days or one year and tells buyers to check the product manual.

Shared terms apply. Coverage is for defective materials or workmanship only. You'll need the original receipt, and you pay shipping. Dorel may replace parts or the product. It may substitute if a model is discontinued, and you can't pick the swap. Misuse, abuse, alteration, use against the manual, and normal wear aren't covered. Dorel decides what counts as a defect in its sole discretion. The warranty is non-transferable and covers only the original purchaser. Implied warranties last only as long as the express warranty.

The exclusions are broad and the mattress is discontinued. In practice these warranties are of limited use now.

Safety 1st vs. other brands

Safety 1st competed at the value end of crib mattresses. It sat below Sealy Baby, Serta, Graco, Delta Children, Newton, and Naturepedic on price and on spec detail. It has now left the category. At $49 and $53.25, it was 30 to 80 percent cheaper than Graco, Delta, Sealy, and Newton. It still offered GREENGUARD certification, a 5 in fiber core, a 50 lb limit, and a 10 or 15 year warranty.

It couldn't match rivals on availability, range, or detail. Those rivals are in stock at Target, but Safety 1st isn't. It didn't have an innerspring, hybrid, foam, or latex model. Only the Deluxe Dual 2-in-1 and Canada's Grow with Me had dual firmness. It didn't publish density, IFD, or layer data, so you can't compare them. Sister brand Little Seeds and Dorel Home Products still market crib mattresses. Dorel Home Products made Peaceful Lullabies.

The brand says it was named an America's Most Recommended brand for Crib and Toddler Mattress after a Women's Choice Award in 2019. That's a consumer-voted award, not lab testing. You won't find a head-to-head test naming Safety 1st on Sleepopolis, Tuck, BabyGearLab, Wirecutter, US News 360 Reviews, or Consumer Reports.

How we put this review together

We read the brand's own product, policy and warranty pages, then checked retailer listings and public complaint sites like the Better Business Bureau. We last checked everything here in September 2026. Prices and policies change, so confirm them on the seller's page before you buy. You can read more in our methodology and editorial policy.

Quick answers before you buy

Is Safety 1st a mattress brand, and who owns it?

It was. Safety 1st is a Dorel Juvenile brand of Dorel Industries (TSX: DII.B, DII.A) that joined the Dorel Group in 2000. It built a crib mattress line around Heavenly Dreams and Peaceful Lullabies. Today safety1st.com lists 184 products and 37 collections, and none is a mattress.

Can I still buy a Safety 1st crib mattress in 2026?

Only leftover or resale stock, so you'll pay more or buy used. As of September 2026, Amazon shows Heavenly Dreams (B004044LD4) as currently unavailable. Walmart shows Peaceful Lullabies (item 19511840) as out of stock. Target's crib mattress search returns no Safety 1st model.

How much did they cost, and what value did they offer?

Heavenly Dreams Standard Firm cost $49.00 on Amazon. Peaceful Lullabies cost $53.25 on clearance from $69.00 at Walmart. That made them among the cheapest GREENGUARD crib mattresses in the US. They ran roughly 30 to 80 percent below in-stock Graco, Delta, Sealy, and Newton models at Target.

What are they made of, and are they firm enough for a newborn?

All models are firm 5 in fiber-core mattresses, never coils. The Heavenly Dreams line uses a high-density thermo-bonded polyester core. The Supreme Firm and Peaceful Lullabies use a cotton, wool, and polyester blend. Covers are vinyl or bamboo-rayon. They're GREENGUARD certified, free of flame retardants, phthalates, and lead, and meet 16 CFR 1633. Size is 52 to 52.5 by 27.5 in.

What is the biggest complaint?

Durability, and specifically the cover, so you'll want to check it often. Of 565 Amazon reviewers who discuss durability, 332 were negative and 233 positive. Owners report vinyl cracking and flaking within 8 to 11 months and middle sagging by around 8 months. Some see a gap at one end of the crib as the cover softens.

What warranty and returns apply?

Heavenly Dreams has a 10-year limited warranty and Peaceful Lullabies has 15 years. They cover defects in materials or workmanship only, for the original purchaser with a receipt. You pay shipping, and normal wear is excluded. Dorel decides what counts as a defect. You can return within 30 days direct from safety1st.com with a pre-paid label, or free 90-day returns at Walmart. There's no sleep trial, so you can't test it at home.
