Handcraft Mattress Company Review
This profile covers the boat and marine side of Handcraft Mattress Company (HMC) at boatbeds.com. HMC is a family-owned, fourth-generation US maker of custom marine mattresses since 1986. It sells direct, with linens, through factories in California and Florida plus reps worldwide. The eight-plus models run from value foam at about $795 Twin to the System 6 pocket-coil at $4,900 King. A lifetime limited warranty backs them. You'll like it if you own a boat with odd berth shapes and need mildew-proofing. It isn't for your home bedroom, and it doesn't publish a sleep trial.

Which mattress suits your sleep needs?
These picks are based on listed firmness only, not brand sleeper testing. Side sleepers should look at the softest pressure-first choices, Latex Poly Foam (soft) and Talalay Premium Plush (medium-firm to plush). Back sleepers can look at Gel Foam Poly (medium to firm), Standard Talalay (medium-firm) and Gel Over Latex (firm base, plush top). Stomach sleepers get the most support from Standard Foam (firm to extra firm) and System 6 (firm).
Hot sleepers can try gel-bead memory foam with Tencel or bamboo Cool Touch covers. The brand doesn't publish test data. If you're heavier, the denser latex and pocket-coil units (System 5 and 6, Gel Over Latex) are the thickest and most supportive by construction. The brand does not publish weight guidance (checked September 2026). For low-clearance berths, look at the 4.5 in Standard Foam or Standard Talalay.
Mattress prices and value
Standard-list prices from the boatbeds.com pricing page, Twin to King, are: Standard Foam $795 to $1,195; Latex Poly $1,045 to $1,935; Gel Foam Poly $1,295 to $2,185. Standard Talalay is $1,300 to $2,385; Premium Plush Latex $1,665 to $2,995; Gel Over Latex $2,095 to $4,100; System 6 $2,700 to $4,900. Overnighter runs $950 to $1,650 plus a $45 embroidery digitizing fee.
A hinge-fold adds about $300 for Twin, $350 for Full and Queen, and $375 for King. Extras include straps and buckles at about $200, zippers at about $200 and sheet snaps at about $125. A boat-show pricing page runs lower, such as Gel Over Latex King at $2,835 and Standard Foam Twin at $580.
These are premium custom prices, well above boxed home mattresses. You're paying for made-to-pattern fit, marinization and the lifetime limited warranty. Every berth is quoted custom, so confirm live pricing.
What are the mattresses made of?
Every mattress is custom-built in the USA to a paper pattern. It has vinyl marinization, a waterproof vinyl layer on the bottom against the hull, to block moisture, mold and mildew. All beds offer the patented no-feel hinge-fold for storage access.
Comfort layers include 5-lb gel-bead memory foam, domestic Talalay latex (ILD 44 standard core) and Poly Q high-density foam (2.8 to 3.0 lb in Standard Foam). Coil models use Bonnell, pocket or micro coils with fiber insulator pads and foam edge encasement. Covers are Tencel or bamboo Cool Touch smooth or quilted tops, damask or circular-knit quilting, and tack-and-jump pillow tops.
The brand does not publish CertiPUR, GOTS, GOLS or OEKO-TEX certification (checked September 2026). Its FAQ says all mattresses meet or exceed US Coast Guard flammability and marine specs. It describes the latex as hypo-allergenic, mildew-proof and bacteria-resistant.
How well do the mattresses hold up?
Durability terms rest on the warranty, not lab tests. The lifetime limited warranty goes to the original purchaser. It covers defects in workmanship and materials, except the cover. The remedy is repair or replacement, and HMC pays freight up to $300, only in year one. It excludes normal body depressions, firmness preference, water stains, burns and mildew from excessive moisture. It isn't transferable. The foam category page calls it a 5-year limited lifetime warranty.
The brand says 5-lb gel foam is specified for longer life, Talalay latex is long-lasting and buoyant, and patterns carry a 10-year guarantee. We found no independent durability testing from RTINGS, Sleep Foundation labs or Cornell. The brand does not publish sag-depth thresholds or foundation specs (checked September 2026).
Customer reviews and complaints
The boatbeds.com site publishes first-name testimonials only. They come from Palm Beach FL, Seattle WA, San Diego CA, Annapolis MD and Sydney Australia. Others come from Clearwater FL, Emerald Isle NC, the British Virgin Islands, San Francisco CA and Miami FL. All are positive. There are no star ratings or counts.
We found no third-party ratings on Google, BBB, Yelp, Sleep Foundation, Mattress Clarity, Sleepopolis or RTINGS. The BBB site was unavailable when we checked in September 2026. We found no complaint themes from primary sources. News posts show repeat yacht customers such as Ocean Alexander, Fleming and Rybovich. Quote-based custom marine sales generate few public reviews. Read up on pattern fit and lead times before you buy.
Where can you try and buy?
This is the boat and marine channel. You buy direct by quote at boatbeds.com. We found no online checkout. Call 800-241-7751 or email sales@hmcwest.com. The factory showrooms are HMC West, 1131 Baker Street, Costa Mesa, CA 92626, and HMC East, 1602 NW 23rd Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33311.
You can try beds through regional reps and distributors in most major boating areas, and at boat shows. These include Annapolis, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, New England, Newport Beach CA, Palm Beach, Redwood City, Rhode Island, San Diego, St. Petersburg, Seattle and Tampa-IBEX. HMC is an OEM supplier to builders including Viking, Hatteras, Nordhavn, Carver, Catalina, Marquis and Regal. Ordering starts with a paper pattern, measured by a rep or by you, with a 2 to 3 week build time.
Delivery, setup and removal
Made-to-pattern mattresses ship worldwide by common freight carrier, normally in 7 to 10 business days. HMC ships ahead of the scheduled delivery date but says it isn't responsible for freight delays. Local delivery and installation by HMC technicians is available within 1 to 2 hours of either factory. The brand does not publish setup or white-glove pricing, or old-mattress removal (checked September 2026).
Options that affect delivery include one- or two-piece builds, a hinge-fold for installation and hatch access, extensions up to 4 in, Velcro fasteners and zippers. Adjustable beechwood slat platform bases are 4 in thick with an electric remote. They pair with 6.5 to 7.5 in latex mattresses.
Sleep trial and returns
The brand does not publish a sleep trial (checked September 2026). All mattresses are custom and made to pattern, so assume every sale is final. It also doesn't publish returns, exchanges, return shipping, restocking fees or refund timing.
Warranty returns need the HMC part ID from the head-end tag. HMC sends boxing instructions and covers freight up to $300, only in the first year. Custom sizes can't be restocked, so confirm trial and return terms in writing with your rep before you order.
Warranty
The consumer-direct text is a lifetime limited warranty. It covers the original purchaser only. It covers defects in workmanship or materials, except the cover, and replacement covers are charged. The remedy is repair or replacement. HMC may substitute comparable materials or models and doesn't guarantee a fabric match.
HMC pays freight up to $300 only if you report the defect within one year. After that, you pay freight. A claim needs the HMC part ID tag, and you follow HMC's boxing instructions. It excludes normal body depressions, firmness preference, water stains, burns and mildew from excessive moisture. It doesn't transfer to a new boat owner. HMC takes no liability for inconvenience or consequential damages. The foam line is also described as a 5-year limited lifetime warranty. Full claim steps are at boatbeds.com/warranty.
Handcraft Mattress Company vs. other brands
Against home innerspring brands like Serta and Sealy, HMC wins on custom berth shapes, hinge-fold storage access and vinyl marinization. It loses on price, trial and returns, and review depth. Against budget boxed foam like Zinus and Lucid, HMC wins on fit and marine durability. It costs multiples more and has no bed-in-a-box convenience.
Against other custom RV, marine and odd-size specialists, HMC has 40 years of boat-only heritage and OEM builder ties. Its lifetime limited warranty compares with typical 5 to 10 year terms. Against luxury home latex and foam, it offers comparable materials (Talalay, 5-lb gel foam). The marine-proofing and pattern service justify the premium.
How we put this review together
We read the brand's own product, policy and warranty pages, then checked retailer listings and public complaint sites like the Better Business Bureau. We last checked everything here in September 2026. Prices and policies change, so confirm them on the seller's page before you buy. You can read more in our methodology and editorial policy.

Quick answers before you buy
Is Handcraft Mattress Company a home-mattress brand?
No. This profile covers its boat and marine channel at boatbeds.com. It sells custom berth mattresses, toppers, linens and the Overnighter portable bed, all made in the USA.
How does ordering work?
Every bed starts from a paper pattern of your berth, measured by a rep or by you. Build takes 2 to 3 weeks, and HMC guarantees patterns for 10 years.
Will the mattress resist boat moisture and mildew?
Each mattress gets a vinyl marinized waterproof bottom layer. The brand also describes latex models as mildew-proof and bacteria-resistant.
Can you feel the hinge-fold seam?
Per the brand FAQ, no. Padding above the hinge hides the fold line.
Is there a sleep trial or returns?
The brand does not publish either (checked September 2026). Confirm terms in writing, since custom sizes can't be restocked.
What does the warranty really cover?
It's a lifetime limited repair-or-replace warranty for manufacturing defects. The cover is excluded. Freight is covered up to $300 in year one only, and it isn't transferable.
