NELL Mattress Review

NELL Sleep USA sells one Japan-handcrafted 13-inch pocket-coil mattress in six sizes. It's built around thousands of individually wrapped coils with minimal foam. The goal is breathability, zoned support, motion separation and easy turning. You get a 365-night trial, free US delivery and a lifetime warranty at premium online prices. It suits you if you want a responsive innerspring feel instead of memory foam sink. It's not for you if you want a plush hug, a choice of firmness or a price under $1,000.

Checked September 2026 against the brand's own pages and public listings. We haven't sleep-tested these mattresses, so treat this as a buyer's summary of what the brand publishes.

Which mattress suits your sleep needs?

Hot sleepers get a thin-foam plus coil airflow design, positioned as cooler and less sinky than memory foam. The brand suggests airing it weekly if you use a protector. Combination sleepers get responsive coils and a zoned middle, marketed for easier turning, up to 20 position changes a night.

If you have back pain, the brand claims zoned hip support and spinal alignment. One on-site testimonial reports lower-back pain disappeared, but no clinical evidence is published. Couples get motion separation from individually wrapped coils, which is claimed. Edge sitters get a reinforced border said to help with sitting and getting in and out. The brand doesn't publish guidance by stomach, side or back position (checked September 2026).

Mattress prices and value

From nellusa.com, sale prices are Twin $1,999, Twin XL $2,099, Full $2,499, Queen $2,799, King $3,599 and Cal King $3,699. All are 13 inches tall. The Queen has an immediate-pay price of $1,959.30. Affirm is offered from about $82 per month at 0 percent APR for 3 to 24 months (24 payments totaling $1,959.30), with rates of 0 to 36 percent subject to check.

The homepage promotes one refined design after more than 300 prototypes, not a large catalog. This is premium pricing against budget bed-in-a-box beds, with a 365-night free-return trial and lifetime warranty included. The brand doesn't publish split pricing or coupon stacking (checked September 2026).

What are the mattresses made of?

Per the product and About pages, the build has five parts. A cotton-rich high-performance top fabric is described as airy and resistant to pests, mildew and smell. An airflow system of several slim foam strata moves heat out, instead of one thick foam block. A micro-spring comfort top of pliable small springs contours and eases pressure. A dense zoned pocket-coil support base has a firmer middle for hips and a softer zone for shoulders. A strengthened border helps with sitting and getting in and out.

It's marketed as handcrafted in Okawa City, Fukuoka, Japan, with custom spring-forming equipment and tenth-millimeter coil tuning, minimal polyurethane foam and no memory foam sink. The brand doesn't publish certifications such as CertiPUR-US, GOTS or OEKO-TEX, or foam densities (checked September 2026).

How well do the mattresses hold up?

The brand claims a spring-dominant network with minimal foam resists sagging better than heavy polyurethane foam designs, with high-durability pocket coils and reinforced edges. We found no third-party cycle testing, sag measurements or long-term owner data. The warranty triggers at sag over 1.5 inches, with replacement.

Care rules affect longevity. Use a frame, and don't put it directly on the floor, because of moisture risk. Keep the top side up with no flipping, and rotate head-to-toe every 6 months to 1 year. Unbox within one week, use sheets, and air it weekly if you use a protector. The brand doesn't publish an expected lifespan in years (checked September 2026).

Customer reviews and complaints

Only on-site social proof is available. The King page showed three stories. Whitney reported lower-back pain disappeared and she woke refreshed. Steph said her dog loves it. Kitsune noted easy turning. We saw no aggregate star score or review count. The reviews page showed only a line inviting testimonials.

The brand doesn't publish common complaints or defect rates (checked September 2026). We found no independent ratings from Sleep Foundation, Sleepopolis, Mattress Clarity, GoodBed, Trustpilot, BBB, Reddit or Amazon.

Where can you try and buy?

You can buy direct only, through nellusa.com, as of September 2026. We found no showrooms, no authorized store list, and no Amazon, Walmart, Costco, Wayfair or Target listings. The brand says in-home testing beats showroom testing. Split king is made by pairing two Twin XL units on a split frame.

Contact is a Contact Us form with name, email and message fields. There's also a newsletter signup. Social links go to Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube and TikTok under NELL Sleep USA. The brand doesn't publish a phone number, street address or hours (checked September 2026).

Delivery, setup and removal

Standard US transit is free, except Hawaii and Alaska, which add $200, tax included, added automatically at checkout. The FAQ cites typical delivery within 3 to 4 days of purchase if stocked, subject to location, weather and traffic. Orders are new and never redistributed returns.

To set up, open the carton, pull out the roll, peel the film slowly and lay the bed flat. You can use it the same day, though it's undersized at first, and it reaches full loft after about a day. Unbox within one week, because long compression risks harm. Use a frame. You can't re-compress it after unpacking. The brand doesn't publish white-glove setup or old-mattress removal (checked September 2026). Return pickups are doorway only, and staff don't enter or take the cartons and wrap.

Sleep trial and returns

The home trial lasts 365 nights from arrival to your request date, also called the 365-Days Return Policy, with free return if you're not satisfied. You need at least 14 days of use before you return it. Returns are for comfort only, and wrong size or color dissatisfaction is excluded. You submit a Return Request Form, answer a support survey with your pickup preference, and hand over the uncompressed bed at the doorway.

If you don't answer the survey within 1 month, the request is void. Each item is judged separately, so partial returns of multi-item orders are allowed. Sale and coupon orders stay trial-eligible. Outbound return transit is covered, but the initial remote surcharge isn't refunded. After a return you can't buy the same model in another size. The brand doesn't publish a separate exchange program (checked September 2026). Cancel through chat only, and it may be impossible depending on shipment progress.

Warranty

The Lifetime Durability Warranty, also called the Lifetime Durability Guarantee, is verified by your identity and order, with no paper certificate. For sag over 1.5 inches, the remedy is replacement with the same or an upgraded model. If it's discontinued, you get the next best version. Years 1 to 10 are free. In years 11 to 20 you pay 70 percent of the original price. In years 21 and up you pay 80 percent. It applies to website or authorized-retailer purchases.

It excludes normal wear and tear, burns, stains, tears and floor use without a bed base. Report defects by email with clear images. Moving to a region without service, such as overseas, ends pickup ability, the trial and long-term coverage. The brand doesn't publish full claim steps, shipping responsibility or prorated-service details (checked September 2026). See nellusa.com/pages/warranty and nellusa.com/pages/faqs.

NELL vs. other brands

Against memory foam beds, NELL contrasts itself in a section titled Do not Fall for the Soft Trap of Memory Foam. It positions coils as responsive, cooler and easier to turn on, versus sink-in, heat-retentive foam. Against typical luxury innersprings, NELL cites thousands of coils per king. The homepage and King page list 4704, and the About sections give 4704 versus 4707. It says most luxury brands use 500 to 1000. It also cites tenth-millimeter tuning and Japanese handcrafting. Coil gauge, foam densities and independent performance tests aren't published.

Against budget online hybrids, NELL is premium-priced but adds 365 nights and lifetime coverage. The brand doesn't publish head-to-head firmness, cooling, motion or edge comparisons with named competitors (checked September 2026).
