Stearns & Foster Reserve Mattress Review: Is It Worth It?

Trial 90 days, with 30 days of use asked first; refund minus return shipping fee
Warranty 10-year limited warranty on mattresses

The 30-second verdict

No, most buyers should skip the Reserve. The main catch is its high price. Saatva Classic is a better fit for hot sleepers who want coils or bounce. Sleep Foundation scores it 9.5/10 overall and 10/10 for temperature control. Saatva's Queen list price is $2,229-$2,249, versus the Reserve's Queen list price of $4,899. The Reserve does offer TEMPUR-Indulge™ memory foam and IntelliCoil® Micro for shoppers who specifically want that build. Buy it only if that build is worth the cost to you.

Pros
  • Cool-touch cover. The brand says its TENCEL™ knit and cooling fibers create a cool-to-the-touch surface.
  • Airflow system. The brand says its ventilated coils and external vents increase breathability.
  • Foam certification. The brand says foam materials in the Reserve models meet CertiPUR-US standards.
Cons
  • Base limits. A box spring is incompatible; the brand requires a firm, solid-surface, non-spring foundation.
  • Return fee. The brand's trial lasts 90 days, but a return costs $175.
  • Delivery wait. The brand says delivery is within 2-3 weeks, so plan ahead.
Feel & Fit

How firm is the Reserve, and which firmness should you pick?

Choose the Soft Euro Pillow Top if you want the softest GoodBed reading; the scores do not show which option suits a particular sleeper. The named choices are Medium Tight Top, Firm Euro Pillow Top, and Soft Euro Pillow Top. GoodBed rated the Medium Tight Top and Firm Euro Pillow Top both Medium-Soft (6) on its rating scale, and the Soft Euro Pillow Top Soft (7). Mattress Clarity rated the Reserve Soft 5/10 on its scale in a May 18, 2026 reading. Use the scores within each tester's scale, not as a direct comparison between testers.

Is the Reserve good for back pain?

The Reserve may be worth considering for back pain, but Mattress Clarity’s assessment is not a promise of relief. Mattress Clarity says the bed cushions the lumbar region and supports neutral spinal alignment, which may matter if you want support around your lower back. The brand separately says its IntelliCoil HD design provides adaptive support for every type of sleeper. That is a brand claim, not an outside finding. Treat Mattress Clarity’s view as one input, not proof the bed will ease your pain.

How is it built?

The Reserve’s layer order runs from the quilt layer at the top to the AIRVENT SYSTEM at the bottom.

  • Quilt Layer: a moisture-wicking knit cover with TENCEL™ and cooling fibers. Stearns & Foster describes it as cool to the touch.
  • COMFORT LAYER: TEMPUR-Indulge™ memory foam and IntelliCoil® Micro, which Stearns & Foster says deliver support and comfort.
  • INTELLICOIL® HD: densely packed coils for adaptive support, according to Stearns & Foster.
  • PRECISION EDGE: a high-density coil border for edge support, according to Stearns & Foster.
  • AIRVENT SYSTEM: ventilated coils with external air vents intended to increase breathability, according to Stearns & Foster.

Stearns & Foster lists the Reserve’s assembly country as the United States.

Materials and certifications

The cover is a silky TENCEL knit, and CertiPUR-US covers the foam materials in Reserve models, not the entire mattress. Stearns & Foster says those foam materials meet the certification's standards. Treat it as a check on the foam materials, not as certification of the cover or every part of the bed.

What bed base does it need?

Use a firm, solid-surface, non-spring foundation or adjustable base that can support the mattress and sleepers; Stearns & Foster lists both as compatible. A box spring is not compatible. A slatted base needs 5 equally spaced hardwood cross-slats, each 3 inches wide and no more than 4 inches apart, with a center leg. For a Split King, the brand’s setup uses two mattresses on one adjustable frame. The brand says an inadequate base can exclude defect coverage; plywood, bunkie boards, and plastic liners are examples.

Trials, returns and fees

Stearns & Foster says the Reserve has a trial lasting 90 days. A return or exchange costs $175 shipping, plus tax; an exchange may also require a price difference. Budget for these costs if you might send it back or swap it, since the trial does not make returns free.

Your trial, night by night
  1. Day 1 Your count begins; ask the brand which day it starts
  2. Night 90 The last night of the trial
What each choice costs you
Keep it Nothing more to do
Return it $175 Retail store purchases subject to retailer policy
Swap it $175 A same-model feel exchange may have a price difference and added shipping fee.

Not covered by the trial: Purchases from retail stores follow that retailer’s return and exchange policies.

Trial: 90 days. Ask the brand which day the count starts, then put the last date in your calendar.

What does the warranty cover, and what voids it?

The 10-year limited warranty protects against product defects after the first 90 nights. For sagging, its stated cutoff depends on the mattress's top type: 1 ½″ for quilted or tufted top mattresses, or ¾″ for flat top panel mattresses without any quilting or tufting. Check which top applies before judging a sag against the cutoff.

What do owners like and complain about?

Owner ratings give a favorable overall read, but not a feature-by-feature verdict. Stearns & Foster’s site lists 4.6 out of 5 stars from 228 reviews. GoodBed rates the Reserve 84/100, Very Good, based on 18 owner experiences. Read each score with its own source and scale; they are not a shared measure. Treat them as broad signals of owner feedback, not proof that a particular comfort detail will suit you. Choose based on whether the mattress matches your needs, rather than treating either rating as a promise.

Has the Reserve changed since it launched?

The Stearns & Foster Reserve launched in 2016, had a complete redesign in 2019 and was named Reserve Hepburn, then was redesigned again in 2023. For an older-versus-newer comparison, check both the model name and redesign year: the history shows the Reserve has not kept one unchanged design.

How we research and report

We read the maker's own pages, outside testers and owner reviews, and we date every fact. We do not test beds ourselves. Every source we used is listed below with the day we checked it.

Step 01Brand

What Stearns & Foster publishes

We read the product page, spec tabs and policy pages for layers, sizes, list prices, trial and warranty.

Step 02Testers

Outside test results

We credit each score to the tester that gave it and never blend scores into one number.

Step 03Owners

Owner reviews

Where a rating exists, we read the owner reviews behind it and outside summaries of what owners like and dislike.

We could not find enough good evidence to answer these questions yet, so this page leaves them out: Sleep Position & Weight, Partner Motion, Where to Buy or Try, Fiberglass, How Long It Lasts.
